This map is for a TD(-ish) game; I’m going for a more zombie hideout type of scene. I was thinking the zombies would go thru the broken walls.
I’m going to add buildings next to the roads, which would be where the zombies would spawn.
Question;
I’m confused as to how to make this look a lot more interesting as its just bland for now.
I need to keep some empty space inside the walled area for the player to build (player can put sand-bags, walls etc.), so I can’t fill it up too much — but what kind of details or props could I add to make the scene look more interesting without cluttering the build area?
For me, I would say add some more environmental stuff, trees, ground cracks, and vines.
Props! Use props, I understand that players can place stuff but having players place everything will get too tiring and be super hard to do whilst fighting zombies. Add some forklifts, broken-on-fire cars, machine guns, crates, mini gun posts, barbed wire fence, just stuff that you would run into in like a junkyard kind of.
Maybe even add a super cool-looking radio tower that you have to repair and be able to get supply drops after repairing it?
Just explore with props, don’t flood it leave some space for players to do stuff but not build the whole thing, and add some environmental details.
Id say on top of this, ensure you have the right textures for the games art style and to match the build and lighting. Thats really important to making a good looking, non-bland build.
if players are supposed to place towers anywhere inside of the fenced off area, i would say its best to keep it mostly empty so that players can place towers and fortifications anywhere they like to fend off zombies as best as they can.
what i would do is focus on the area that is not going to be touched by the players (which is in this case the area outside of the fence) and maybe decorate a little around that building in the corner, if it isnt a placeable tower. otherwise leave the slate clean so that players can follow their strategy and place towers wherever they like and have enough room for them.
in such a genre like tower defense you need a lot of space for your troops. adding a bunch of trash to the game zone while might make it look prettier, will inhibit the player’s ability to do as they please and freely place down troops and fortifications wherever they like. its all about strategy and surviving. its why i think its better to decorate outside of the tower area where the players wont be affected anyways
