How do I select limbs/objects in Blender 2.81a?

Ok so I recently downloaded version 2.81 (I was using 2.79 because i didn’t know there was a 2.8) And, I have a dilemma. I’m trying to select a limb of the roblox character to move it, how do I do so? It just keeps selecting the whole thing, and in explorer it doesn’t show the parts, just the whole thing.

Blender 2.8 and more recent versions seemed to have changed importing .obj files such as Roblox characters, so the entire character is merged together as a single mesh.

To overcome this, the only solution I’ve found to work is to import your character into Blender 2.79 first, save that file, then open up a new scene in Blender 2.8 and append the character (rigged beforehand, if you do that) from the 2.79 file into the 2.8 file. This imports the character with all of its parts separate which you can pose and select individually.

To append, if you need help, open your 2.8 file and go to File>Import>Append and find your 2.79 file. Select the objects folder from inside it, highlight everything, and go to “Append from Library” in the top right corner.

If you need any more help, let me know! I know it seems like a lot of work, but it’s worth it to use Blender 2.8! Good luck!

Interesting - was it different in the past? I started testing the waters myself on 3d modelling using blender recently.

As for my method, I use a 3rd party animation suite (Moon) to rig the model into the position I want, anchor the parts, then export it out. It does what I need, but definitely more of a band-aid fix than an actual solution.

Why do you rig it if its already rigged? Also, why anchor parts?

I have to anchor the parts because otherwise the model defaults to its original pose when I deselect it.

(I believe I meant to say I pre-pose the model in Roblox Studio, not rig. I’m not familiar with animation terms so forgive me for that slip up)

I’ve been using Blender for a few years now, and was using Blender’s older 2.79 version for a while. The importing process used to be much simpler. Objects imported as separate meshes, but for some reason Blender’s newest version simply merges it all as one mesh, and I haven’t been able to find a solution for this in 2.8 itself without going through some workaround such as above.

Hopefully with newer versions of Blender coming out, they release some sort of fix for this, as it’d greatly help other artists and perhaps even animators such as yourself!

If you go to “Preferences” under Edit, you can change your setting back to blender 2.7 by clicking the Keymap tab and at the top you can find Blender 27x. That should set all the old hotkeys and settings back so you won’t have to relearn everything.

I mean there’s a good YT tutorial video for GFX things relating to blender 2.8. Maybe check YT for PicklePie. She’s really good here’s the one where she shows how to rotate the limbs.

I’ve used that tutorial in the past, and while it does work often, there are times where the material/textures don’t line up and I end up with a weird-looking blob. I’m way more used to the studio method, although it’s less optimal.

I recently found a different and more efficient solution to this issue without the use of Blender 2.79!

When you go to import your character into Blender 2.8, change your settings from Split by Object to Split by Group. It’ll look like this, you may need to open the Geometry drop down to see these settings.
