How do you bind a tool and a character in an animation

This problem is quite difficult to explain.

I’m trying to create a sword animation where the player swings the sword and in this image you can see here that this is what it’s supposed to look like:

However when I try it in game it ends up as this:

I watched a couple videos but it’s usually just them animating the character but not the sword, so how do people animate both the item and the character at the same time?
