How do you guys think you need to get the players to get engaged to the game

I’m making a singleplayer story game, i want the game to be hard, so player keeps trying and thinking, “hmmm, i can maybe do it that way” , i thought of making a screen telling the player hints to make it easier, but my friend thinks of making checkpoints, so the game is easier, but i think that would only make the player feel like a god.

now i will proceed to tell the mechanics, you have to fight an AI during the play-time. if you win, you get sent to a cafeteria-like prision. You can interact to NPCs and talk to them so they get you things, like weapons for the play-time, or simply giving you tips, you can also make the NPCs dont like you, so they will give you false tips. every play-time session, the AI will get smarter, at the point where is harder than you thought.
