How do you judge a game's quality?

How do you judge how good a game is and how successful it will be? For instance you join a cafe, how would you judge it? Also do you personally judge different game’s differently? Do you favor some types of games over others? Personally I judge a game by its content and builds, I also take into consideration who built it, if a young kid built a decently good game I would probably think they did a better job then if a famous developer made the same game.

Wood grain.(Just kididng.)

There are alot of things that can be putten into the “judgement” of an game, for example the scripting, building, thumbnail/game icon of the game, i’am not an game reviewer, but i would say you could make an 0/10 about the things i said, and the others i didn’t mention.(Wood grain may also a good thing to check… Wait what)

I would like to judge the game based on how good the mechanics. Even though a game might look good on the outside, if the core gameplay of the game is problematic (a lot of bugs, just grind all over and over again, etc) i would surely drop it even though it probably has great graphics. People will find it successful if they could also bring their friends to the game, in this roblox case (because in core, it’s a multiplayer game).

I would judge the game based on the plot, the idea, etc… say a horror game, is it the normal “oh run away from something ahh!!!” or is it an original idea with great execution?

I agree @ArcticStarfall, the originality of an idea does make up a pretty large portion of the game quality.

Entirely depends on the gameplay focus.

  • Showcases- a quality game has a committed style with detailed builds. Ambience and ambient sounds for bonus points.
  • Games- Quality game idea primary drives a quality game, but you’ll want to have effort put in for all contexts. Have good sounds, have good tools, have good maps, have optimal scripts, aesthetic and simple UI’s.
  • FPS- Should have a good implementation on weaponry, with well executed game mechanics.
  • RPG- Should have unique setting with open world builds.

Also think this is more geared for Game Design Support.

I would judge a game on how it interacts with the player. For an example = ‘Simulators’ are bad games because they don’t involve the player that much. And at the end of the day it becomes a chore rather than an actual fun experience to the player. I’m not saying that all simulators are bad, If a simulator has more content than just pushing a button, that is good.

You said the same thing twice.

It’s true, i’ve seen better simulators that even though adopts the name “simulator” (coughs Fishing Simulator coughs), the gameplay is very interesting since it lets the player to “grind” money more freely and in multiple ways rather than usual sims that only makes tycoon or just walk around collecting something. That’s where the mechanics kicked in again.

This though, probably differ for story-based games. People will focus on the story more rather than the mechanics. If they see the story is very good, hell, i’ve seen multiple players don’t protest about the gameplay.

I wasn’t really using it for suggestions to design a game, but more of an overall survey of how others judge roblox games. @greatgavin
