How do you starting off and build a consistent player base for your new game?

At the moment I’m working on a simple game based around 2008 roblox that involves players working together to defeat a boss. The main issue I face when launching the game is gettings players in the game and keeping them there. It takes a while to defeat the boss so players should be in-game for a decent amount of time.

What I’m particularly looking for is tips or ideas on getting a decent amount of players in a once so that way there’s a type of flow that brings players in and out. It’s very evident that if your game has no active players but, every once in a while a player or two stops by and then leaves your game isn’t going to get an actual player base. No one wants to play a game if nobody else is playing it too.

I don’t have any other games that are popular or, any type of audience for my game so it’s just a stand-alone game release. I’ve thought of sponsoring it however, I doubt that will do much because even if someone clicks on it and plays it they most likely won’t stick around for long if they’re the only player in-game.

This is definitely one of the biggest issues any new game faces when being released it’s very difficult to find and create an audience for your game. I’m hoping to get some good ideas and tips for what I should do. I would be satisfied if my game only had 10 active players coming in and out because to me that’s progress and it’s better than nothing. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hello!

There is an issue with trying to make a game that needs more then one player:

What if you only get one player in a server and they have nothing to do?

The best thing to do is to add something in a “lobby” for players to do by themselves.
Such as a mini obby or something to explore around with.

To keep players in your game, think:

What makes YOU want to stay in a game?
For some it might be the surroundings / cool lighting, competition, cosmetics, a really good story, etc.

Also making the boss too hard to beat from the very beginning would make players leave. Maybe the boss gaining more health as the players get better would be a good idea. Maybe a level system or something.

For growing an audience:
Best tip I could give you is make a YouTube channel about your work and post once every two weeks with some progress. This not only grows an audience, but could also be extra income.

Another big tip is to update your game often. Once a month is fine, but most players want weekly updates. I would not recommend it as it is a ton of work.

Hope my words helped and I hope you get some players on your games. :sunglasses:

To keep a consistent playerbase, first think about what people like to play today. But of course, make it original. Making games that are similar to others will caude them to… Well uh, bore them?

Another thing. You clearly stated “2008 Roblox”. Remember: Most Roblox players are below the age of 13. They probably have no idea about what games these are and usually dislike it.

If you’re making a co-op game, make sure that:

  • A round isn’t too long. Normally a game round lasts between 3-10 minutes. Your rounds should last at least 3 to 5 minutes in order to keep players in your game.
  • The gameplay is easy. On co-op games, you play with any people. Some are skilled, others not so. Make sure your game is easy to understand and the mechanics are fast and quick to learn. Skilled players will use their own tactics and new players can understand better.
  • Everyone can cooperate. Take Arsenal as an example: If there’s someone carrying the whole team, not only the enemies will leave - but your teammates too. Try to give every player a task, such as melee, shooting from far, defending, medic, and so. Everyone may have a task they’re better at than others.

Well, how would you keep players playing? Okay. Think about the audience who would play your game. 2008? Veterans will play it. They would understand the game better than younger audiences. You can’t keep a game running if the main audience is a small number of players as that small number may not even be interested. Take in consideration about other “classic” games, like TUW (The Underground War).

Considering that this community is pretty toxic, making a PvE game will not work. One would call another one useless for not being able to help and they’ll quit. Making a team vs team game will not work either. It’s better if players stand-alone and play for themselves. This is a honest opinion.
