How I can make realistic environments

Hey, to begin with, I wasn’t sure where to post this, so I posted it here. Does anyone know how the super-realistic devs get their game to be so graphically designed? I’ve looked for youtube videos, but all i’ve seen was people designing the environment, with the high-quality assets already made.

I want to make a nice forest with a dirt pathway leading to an old house, but I just have no clue on how to make nice assets, but also keeping the tri count low. I’ve found a couple of free packs that have trees and grass, but the tri counts range over 1+ million tris, so it wouldn’t work.

If anyone has any past knowledge in it, or knows of Youtube videos that can affect this category, I am all ears! Thanks!

P.S. I am not looking for insanely well graphics like how some showcases are made, as I want the game to still be well-run and I have a whole storyline made for the game, but I want it to be mid-high poly.

Ultra-realistic assets are primarily achieved through the use of high-quality PBR textures. The Roblox tree asset pack is a great example of high-quality yet optimised assets. If your total/scene draws are high and total over 1 million tris, this is perfectly normal for a “realistic” environment with a seemingly overabundant amount of assets.

You’ll be able to find high-quality textures on websites like textures.com or just making them yourself in 3rd-party texturing softwares like Adobe Substance Painter or Quixel Mixer.

If you are also using terrain, you will be able to change legacy terrain textures into ones you prefer.
