How important is sound to a game's success?

For a game to be a success, such as, constantly having 100+ players online, how important is sound to that success? I often don’t put much effort at all into putting sounds into any games I make because I worry about getting free sounds uploaded that are copyrighted, and I find it expensive for me to upload my own sounds. For music I also usually just put any Roblox uploaded music I find sounds decent into my game.
Can sound boost a game’s success and quality? Is it as important as, for example, UI?

Depends on what your game is. But sound is important hints by Roblox made a Bloxy Award for it this year. Also UI is very important but sound can be just as important. Tell us the game and maybe we could help out better.

Sounds are included in a user experience. And the sound is really definable in showing what type of game it is. i.e. a dark and scary horror game would have a different sound and audio than a cartoonish more childish game.
The sound really adds to the feel of the game and adds to the experience that the user has in game. Some games can be successful without sounds but again it depends on the game and whether or not it adds that extra effect to the game.
In my opinion, sounds adds so much more depending on what the game is. I just like a game with sound as it creates so much more of an experience and a feel to the game,

I don’t have a specific game in mind that I’m asking for, but more generally. For examples:

  • An explosion sound for exploding rockets
  • Cars making noise as they drive
  • The atmosphere around the game

Basic general examples of sound effects. Also sound effects for UI elements like buttons when they’re clicked. And of course, music in general to fit any game’s purpose, whether that’s cartoony or more intense etc.

Yes those sort of things need sound. Sound is one of the foundations of life. You could get away with the Roblox sounds like if you were doing a Life In Paradise game cause there is no need. But for car sounds like starting up, drifting, etc yes it’d be needed.

This video goes into depth of why sound is important maybe you should watch it and other YouTube videos.

  • Hope I answered your question, John.

Sound is very important, but it depends on what game you are making. If you are making, lets say, a simulator game, I would say sound isn’t as important as it would be in a horror game. In a horror game, anything for a jump scare without sound isn’t as scary. If you have no robux to make sounds, even 2 second long sounds, I still recommend using other sounds that are already created on roblox because sounds add on to your game, and can sometimes make it better and scarier. Even if you have a few sounds, I think it would add-on more to your game than no sounds. This is just my opinion, though, so you can do whatever you want.

I feel like explosion sounds, car noises, and a basic atmosphere would definitely add more experience and creation to the feel of the game.
And sound effects for UI elements add that too.
I agree with those that say the sound in a game adds more of a life to the game and an overall feel of what the game is.

Well, Honestly sounds are important for some players and some players just mute the sound its mostly what the players think but I I suggest putting sound into games because it makes it more real and stuff if you know what Im saying.

Sounds is one of the important factors that a game must have, but it really depends what type of game it is. If it’s a horror game/showcase then those wouldn’t require much sounds than a prison game would have so its always important to know that. Adding sounds to little things in game is useful even if you think it isn’t.

Adding sounds to the following is not a problem:

Explosions
Guns (obviously)
Type of atomsphere of the game
When the player’s character moves/ interacts with objects and even when the player’s character walks on the grass will definitely increase players’ satisfaction
Animated UI’s etc

Yes, the sound design is quite important in a game. Imagine this: You’re stuck in a part of a game that is very difficult. But you keep on trying because of that great soundtrack. Another example is of a horror game, the sound help’s you feel like your there in the game itself. And you’re so scared that you can hardly go into the next area/room. It just gives the game you are playing have more depth and it help’s the player stay connected. P.S: A great game that i have played recently has a lot of great sound’s in it is ‘Lost in vivo’.

To add onto what everyone else has said, adding effects for your sound makes it a lot more satisfying too. Yesterday, I made the music in my game get muffled when the camera is underwater using distortion and equalizer effects. It makes the music sound much better and the game feels more atmospheric (I think that’s the right word). But yes sound is very important.
