How long should the round and intermission last in my game?

  1. What do you want to achieve?
I’m making a game where there are small obbies and relatively short rounds so the game is fast paced and the player is almost always doing something.

  2. What is the issue?
I’m a little stuck at how long I should make the rounds and intermissions last.
I currently have only one map that I’m using to test map loading systems and etc. If I nail every jump, I can reach the end in about 10 seconds. If I miss a jump, it can take me 15-20 seconds.

I want to make the game in such a way that the player doesn’t spend half their playtime waiting for the round to start but I also want there to be time for the player to go to the shop or have a rest.

  1. What solutions have you thought of so far?
Currently the rounds last 25 seconds and the intermission is 10 seconds, but this isn’t quite the right balance for me.

I appreciate any input! I never thought I would be having an issue like this!

Intermissions need to be balanced, too long and the player might get bored, too short and the player wouldn’t be able to appreciate the round they just played. My picks would be 20, 25 or 30.

Thanks for the reply! So what you mean is that the intermission should be about the same as the round lengths? Maybe even a bit less like 20 second intermission and 25 second game time so the players don’t spend too much time waiting.
