How Names Are Evolving on Roblox

OH. Well I need to read it again

I believe aliases are client-side & local

As someone who is in security, having this feature to put their real name on Roblox is a huge privacy risk, especially to those who don’t know the risks associated with having your real name as your public display name on social media platforms. This could create a new group of threat actors who can DOX users on the platform. This is especially worrisome as we remember that this is a kids platform. I am very much at odds with this addition.

The Alias feature is cool though, but I feel like it is a little redundant because we have unique usernames.

This is huge news! Roblox is really making the platform better this year.

I love how this is optional, I will indeed be using it as soon as it’s out globally

As usual, I have a few questions.

First, why is there no way to get rid of this after it is set? Is there going to be a way to do this?

Also, is this just an addition and rename to the display name or is it a new feature?

Wait, why do those profile pictures look better than the ones we have?

They have a custom emote, shadow and everything!
Also, that is not what 3D clothing looks like…

I wonder why games aren’t allowed to read user-set aliases? Not really asking for it as a feature, just curious on the reasoning here.

Pretty sure it’ll work just like setting a display name. If someone else sets a name for you they will not see what you set but what they set.

Because this is just a presentation.

This is simply incorrect and creates a false sense of security, developers can read aliases via localscript and can in-theory, log such names.

Why is this question written as if it was supposed to be provided to the employee writing this post? I assume you mean “Will we be forcing users to change their names?”

Yes, this is probably why, but they look a lot better than the ones we have. They might update the profile pictures to be like this.

This is nice so 8yrs don’t put their first and last name

Very cool its not a mandatory thing since i can see most people not using this on people they just met randomly

No thanks. What the actual heck is this? I prefer to go by my username, this is not a goverment institution to waltz in and state your whole legal name to everybody you meet. It just doesn’t sit well with me especially on a platform like roblox.

And that is exactly why it is a optional feature.

So wait, we can now put spaces in names, or is that reserved for the “real name” feature only?

Yes you can technically put spaces in your name now. I have already seen some people do that.

odd question, but i’ve been seeing a lot more spaced names pop up, but these arent actual names, is roblox planning out to release spaced names in general or will it only be under the presumption of a 17+ user using their real name?

Two people I want to address with my post here, technically three if you include the nameless Roblox account.

My thoughts exactly on this update, you’ve said everything I wanted to say.

It seems to me like you’re trying to put the blame on Roblox for making this decision. I believe the user assumes the risk associated with putting their real name as their display name. Roblox is not liable for any DOXXing attacks that occur because of this.

Personally I’m not going to put my real name because I understand the risks and don’t want to take them, and for those who don’t have a grasp of those, your concern is valid to a certain point regardless of which way you meant what you’re saying here.

If I’m misunderstanding your point, do please let me know, my Autism-riddled brain has failed me numerous times before anyways.

I hate to bring politics into this, but if you want the kids to be safe, pass the KOSA bill already. I don’t care that it’s a surveillance bill in disguise. I want to stop seeing skibidi toilet games on the front page just as much as the next guy does.

EDIT: whoops accidentally made this a reply lol

It’ll probably be for display names only. I doubt Roblox will permit spaces in traditional username format.

i assumed so but I was asking if this feature of adding spaces would be limited to the specific situation of “Real name, 17+” and not just allowed everywhere because roblox hasnt really specified

Why should I lose my verified badge over a name change?

This makes no sense at all…

Changing my name to “Mia Gobble” makes my branding consistent.

I remember this feature being present for a while, but not actually doing anything. I’m happy to hear that it’s finally finished now.
