How Names Are Evolving on Roblox

They are pre-rendered images, this is not actually the Roblox website but an animated recreation of it to show off how new features will function. They just pasted in some renders they had to function as avatars

You don’t need this. Alias overrides displayname. There’s no developer use case for reading alias separately. You literally don’t need to care about it.

I believe it depends on which aide you’re accessing it. Server will be the one the player set on their own and the client will be what the client set for that player. Also, aliases will probably be client sided

yet another feature that is limited to US residents

Had the same thought while reading this announcement, it seems odd to further embrace this while changing your (now) name removes your verified badge. There should be a proper review process for name changes rather than this.

I didn’t know Alias’s were separate to begin with to be honest but nice change.

However…
Allowing real world names seems like a big security risk for younger audiences. It’s already proven time and time again that children can verify using their parents ID and have access to these “17+” features.

It just takes one bad actor to see that name, look it up on facebook or something, and see their real identity and potentially family without their consent or knowledge, which doesn’t feel very safe at all.

Will there be any changes or additions to player properties in Studio?

you should really incorporate this nifty feature into a lot of your other announcements, it would really make them go down a LOT better

Probably to make impersonation more difficult. Making your name “Roblox” with a verification checkmark would be problematic, even if your username is different. I’ve seen this be problematic on other platforms: people buy verified accounts, change their name to “Mr. Beast”, and scam people.

No, just no. This is a REAL REAL REAL bad idea and just screams BIG privacy issues.
Edit: reading again, it seems optional but still wouldn’t do this.

To be honest, I probably won’t use it, I don’t have many friends that I recognize without editing their nickname. I would like to see from you in future updates, the addition of a space in the name so that players can add it. That would be a good idea.

How other platforms can do it without any problems, so can Roblox.

Let’s stop overreacting please.

Aliases are client sided. You don’t see what your friends set for you. Aliases are just use by other players to further identity a certain player more specifically like “Big brother” or “Little sister”

Aliases are connected to DisplayNames, no?

thats what i thought but testing it only seemed to give my friend’s display name, not alias

It might not be fully out yet. From what I read in the post, display names will render as their alias if you have one set for the user. This is even compatible with your own name tags.

Ok, but can we hide previous usernames yet? That’s the only change I want with the username system

Then why not have a name change re-verification process?

I still wait for a feature to hide display names altogether. Not only are they completely useless and annoying, but they result in lots of false bans and leaderboard incompatibilities.

I understand if you have a display name and every other username was taken, but it ends up causing more harm than good overall when there is no option to locally hide them.

Instead, Roblox makes an alias feature. Cool, we can set a custom display name for our friends to the username of them, but not every user on the platform. Why is Roblox like this? Give us a local persistent opt-out option for display names.

There needs to be some sort of consistency on the platform. It would be pretty weird if some people would only see Usernames while others would see Display Names and Usernames. Think if X/Twitter did that, would you like it?
