The color grid is the best way if you want to achieve a cartoony look, but if you want to create more realistic materials there’s a better way. Head over to the sphere icon on the right and there you can create new materials. You can change the base color and a lot of other things.
Bake the texture/materials on the object and export as an fbx, use Mesh Importer and it should be automatically applied when imported
