I want to build a map. But I first want to learn how you builders do it. Do you start off by drawing a layout of the map or something? Or do you just jump right into building? I was thinking it would be a good idea for me to first draw a layout of the map, then get a reference to scale with, and find images of what it should look like, and then after making a layout, scale, and having reference images, you would start building. I think this method will work good when I build a map but I just want the feedback of people who’ve built big maps for games before.
I would start off by laying it out on paper or something. If you want to use terrain then you can start by using the terrain generator. You should always be using humanoids to find scale. Thats super important. You don’t want to get halfway through a map and then realize its to big or small. I use lots of references it helps alot.
I might get some pushback on this, but I like to layout a map with free models (make sure there are no backdoors)
Whenever I start working on map, I always try to get a clear idea of what I want and then put it on paper, or use photoshop or other program to lay everything out.
I generally work on my assets/models on a different game than the main one to keep things organized. Though, that’s just my personal way of working, it might not be the most optimal way of working.
I don’t know much about maps myself, but you have to have a layout and a plan you will stick by. You also need to have good and clear consistency throughout it.
If that should be a big map, then yes, I do layout of stuff positions in MS Paint.
I would start on a map layout you personally made (or found one online) and then start building off with the big parts, then dive deeper into the smaller parts and details.
