so am trying to change the rootpart of a skinned mesh that contains the bones character but i don’t know how
I’d assume it would come down to moving the rig (bones) into another part. If it’s the humanoid root part that you are trying to change, just rename the part you want to be the new humanoid root part, grab anything that’s parented to the old humanoid root part, and put it under the new one. then delete the old one.
If you are trying to change the root bone I recommend doing so in blender.

If there are Motor6D objects inside the model meshes, when you change the bones from the old HRP to the new one you created, they will disappear, which means you won’t be able to control/deform the meshes using the bones, so animations and everything else won’t work anymore, and the Rig will also move from the original position.
So no, that is not an option.
