I’m currently working on a round-based melee game. There’s modes like capture the flag, king of the hill, team death match, etc.
So this leads me to the question. What type of ranking system should this game have?
My options so far:
I’ve played many games where you rank up using XP. As you rank up, the next rank becomes harder to achieve. This is stupidly boring and dry in my opinion. At a certain point, your level/rank is pointless.
I’ve seen some games combat this using prestige systems, but this doesn’t appeal to me, as it can be confusing for new players and still loses purpose after a while – just like a normal leveling system.
Some games like fortnite use a per-season ranking system. This way, at the end of every “season”, your rank resets. This never gets old, as it’s always resetting, but you still keep the rewards you gain. This option seems promising to me, but I have to find a way to make this last long-term. This is also a lot to keep up with update-wise.
The game also has ranked mode(s). While we’re not entirely sure of every mode we’re going to make, we’re certain we’re going to have a “battle royale” ranked mode.
So, how do you recommend we add ranking to our game? We need something that will reward the player for playing, while not getting old. We need a way to give lasting rewards as well as immediate rewards. These rewards need to work with both ranked and unranked gameplay.
Thanks for reading. I look forward to hearing back!
Thanks for the input! One question about leveling:
How do you prevent it from getting old? My fear is that after a certain point, the levels will become so difficult to get that there’s no point in grinding for them anymore.
How about every level there is certain rewards the more you level is the more valuable rewards this thing let players grind. For example at level 10 you get a melee. This is the best choice
Use a logarithmic equation to determine EXP required for the next level. By doing this, higher levels will have a similar amount of grind time, while lower levels will have that feeling of increasing EXP demands to level up.
In my experience, players who dedicate a lot of time into a skill-based game don’t care much for levels after a certain point. To keep these players entertained you would need a leaderboard and ranked system, where only high level players can join (level 50+ servers, level 100+ servers, etc).
You would also need relatively frequent updates and melee weapons which completely shift the game’s feel. Thats a problem for once you have those players though, as of right now try to get some people hooked.
