Everywhere I look, I see people asking the same exact question.
How the heck do I make an original game???
Well, although it is an incredibly difficult and annoying task, it is very possible.
Even though I am not the smartest, I have been around long enough to understand some of the basics of originality, and I am here to share these with you, and maybe learn some of your ideas.
First letās start with the concept of originality!
What is Original ???
First of all, no game is fully and entirely 100% original.
But do not worry! They donāt have to be, as long as you maintain at least 50 percent originality, you technically have what is known as, an original game !
The way that I see it, there is four types of originality.
- Concept of game (Storylines, Characters, ect)
- Atmosphere (Build Styles, GASA4 is old ROBLOX, Arsenal is Mid-Poly)
- Gameplay (Tasks, Platformers, Simulators, any type of game loop or play)
- Branding (Name of the game, Advertisement,)
In my eyes, having at least three of these four original concepts makes your game original.
Is it Orignial!!!
For this example, I am going to use the popular ROBLOX game Get a Snack at 4 AM by Stixxal, and its counterpart, Forget Your Friends Birthday by JayPlays_JP. We are going to establish if FYFB is original or a copycat.
Get a Snack at 4 AM VS. Forget Your Friends Birthday!
FYFB was a game heavily inspired by GASA4 and this can be seen in 2 of the 4 types of originality used.
FYFB had an original concept of game because the story was completely altered, as were the characters combining the worlds story together.
FYFB had an original atmosphere, although heavily inspired by GASA4, there was many elements used to make this game its own.
FYFB had an unoriginal gameplay loop, as it had completely borrowed the gameplay seen in GASA4.
FYFB had original branding, as it is its own brand, followed by its own type of advertisement.
FYFB also credits GASA4 as a tool for inspiration.
With all of this in mind is FYFB an original game?
YES!!!
How Do I Make my Own Original Game??
There are two different strategies that I can think of, and I will list them in bullet-point format below. Just know all of these are just tool to help you, not required.
Plan A -
- Take inspiration from a games concept, atmosphere, gameplay, or branding
- Switch it up! Take some of these concepts and make it your own!
- Donāt forget to credit your inspirers
Plan B -
- Acknowledge your brain is amazing and take whatever stupid ideas you have in your brain and make them real
- Know that as long as what you create is amazing and not a total copycat, YOUR A GREAT DEV!
Example of Game Creation!
First, I will take inspiration from the comedic horror type atmosphere of the ROBLOX games āI Love My Jobā by TubPong and āJimās Computersā by Grugchamp.
Second, I will take inspiration from the Task based gameplay seen in GASA4, and the full-on story quests from popular RPGS.
Third I will steal branding, I really only need 3 of 4, right???
The product is a game called, āI Hate My Job: Path to Unemploymentā, a game where a lazy fat man with a frying pan is forced to get a job. Your character will be hired at 4 different institutes where he will soon realize that work is dangerous, and nothing is as it seems.
Puzzles can be as such -
- You are a police detective at a crime scene, but the body is missing! Find each missing body part around the map and place it into the dead body outline to complete the investigation, but beware the murderer is still hanging around, and he doesnāt want you to find out what really happenedā¦
- You work at a very radiated Burger Queen, and the radiation has started to get to your head! Travel through the psychedelic dimension of Burger Queen to find Green Patties and portal back to the real world.
3 - YOUR OWN IDEA!!!
Anyways this is the first article Iāve written, and I am not very smart!
Add your own ideas below if you read this.
Letās make some original stuff and make ROBLOX better!
