How to gain a player-base for a multiplayer game?

Hi, I’m relatively new to the Roblox platform and I’ve been developing a multiplayer fighting game which I plan to release pretty soon.

However, while thinking about what the best way to promote the game and gain a player-base would be, I recognized some potential issues. The first thing that came to mind is of course advertising / sponsors, but I quickly realized that probably wouldn’t be ideal since players are likely to leave soon after noticing there’s no other people to fight against. As far as I know, advertising is one of the most effective ways to gain players, so I was wondering what could be done to remedy this issue.

Thanks.

I don’t have much experience with having a player base and advertising, but I think these are good practices I’ve seen other developers do.

Advertising on social media like Twitter is probably the best way to promoting your game and gaining a player base. Sharing clips of your fighting game might attract people in and if your game is engaging enough it could slowly build a player-base. It has a big reward for no risk.

But, you need to make your game pop to the audience you want to bring in because people scroll through a lot of posts, so your clips need to be able to make them stop, watch what your game has to offer and look for the game link.

Advertising on Roblox like you said is the next option, however, it costs Robux and your ads could flop. There are a ton of threads in the forum on how to advertise your game using ads. Here is one way I’ve heard on how to find the best ad, but do your own research and find threads on advertising from people who know how to advertise:

  1. Make 2-3 ads and advertise them at the same time
  2. After advertising, see which one does the best*
  3. Invest and advertise in that one ad only until it does poorly
  4. Repeat

*There are probably a lot of factors of what makes an ad the “best”, so I’m making it vague here.

Lastly, advertising your game to your friends could also help gain a player base. The word of mouth could eventually gain you a player base.

It all depends if your game is engaging enough for people to come back on. Other than that, being persistent in advertising your game even if it doesn’t look like it’s affecting your player count could still help a long way for your game.
