How to "get into the algorithm" / get a game to its playerbase?

Hey there, my team and I have spent the last months developing a rather unique roundbased combat game. We’ve released it around a month ago investing around 45k Robux in ads. While we thought that this investment might push the game to a point where it gets slowly recommended to players, it did not happen.
According to the game statistics, the game got recommended 2 times on the home screen and that’s it.

You constantly hear devs talking about the game “getting in the algorithm” and thus getting recommended to a new playerbase. Does anyone know how to get to that point?

The game is filled with quests, rewards etc and there’s enough content to grind for. If you want to test it, that’s the link: Cookies - Roblox

Honestly, The way “Get into the algorithm” works, was not making any New or Innovative games. i’m sorry to say this, but to “Get into the Algorithm” is to see what trending the most. For example Back in the 2018-2019 Roblox games were filled with Jojo’s Bizzare adventure. and at that time, it seems like the easiest way to “Get into the Algorithm” is to follow the exact same game made a copy out of it and hope for the better, this has always happen in roblox. for example Blade ball, RNG Games and the most recent trend as of right now was a Copy of Strongest battleground.

in short, “get into the algorithm” is nothing but following the trend of the Current Gen Games. that all.

While that does suck, i do believe that those games need to get recommended too. Right now our game has exactly 2 recommendations, meaning the algorithm didn’t even try. Is that just how it is?

Haha well yea, at first they got recommended too. but what you don’t understand is how they get recommended. it’s hard to explain this in devforum because of regulations and formality, but not all games has to be promoted the way roblox wants it to be promoted. Youtubers/tiktokers, Plays big part of the game industry. the reason Strongest battleground was as big as it is right now because it reach the attention of a SINGLE youtuber and forwarded to the rest, that you can also get these youtubers by “different Means”.

This logo is the reason. If I saw this anywhere I would just think it was a ripoff of a game like Minecraft or Fortnite, just like the “Hedgehog” and “Camel” games are.

Does the logo even get reccomended anymore? I thought they switched to thumbnails.

Would something like that in icon form work better in your opinion?

or rather something like that?

In some cases, yes.

I’m not sure which types uses the icon but I know there is one atleast.

Say your friend was playing the game. If I saw that icon, I would not want to play it. Instead maybe go for some ingame pictures with some text and maybe VFX/GFX (see below)

Like this with the stuff I suggested above.

would you rather click on something like our old icon?

Still looks like ripoffs. Sorry, maybe it’s just not my type.

I found out about your game yesterday from the sponsored section while looking for new opportunities, and one thing that struck me whilest playing it was the lack of a comprehensive game loop since the game only portrays the name “Cookies” and a good long tutorial but no objectives explanation.

From this I would suggest you to simply rename it to “Cookies Bedwars” or similar. Make sure to include the minigame in the title so that new users can understand better which will inevitably bring better engagement

Problem with that would be that it has nothing to do with the game bedwars. While the game has the same art-style (using voxels), the core game loop is too different to just call it bedwars and move on.
The minigame concept has not been seen before on roblox, which is why we can’t really put it into the title.

I am wondering though, why you did not get the objective. The game tells you at many different stages of tutorial and gameplay that you need to build the tower to win. How you get there e.g. how you get the required cookies to do so is up to you. The only thing the tutorial does is show you 2 ways.
How do you think, the game could better explain the objective without making it too complicated?

Just as a reference, those are the times the game tries to tell you the objective. Do you know a way to better explain it to the player?

The tutorial is very detailed and probably gives you great onboarding playtime for the new players, but the thing is when I saw the game I straight up thought it was similar to bedwars so I played in a bedwars way

I joined up, played around with the tutorial and then went to the other players base to destroy their “bed” Only to see that there was no bed around.
After getting killed, I left and I remember looking at the description shortly and saw something regarding destroying other team’s tower/bed.

From this I believe your game could in theory be very similar to bedwars and bring something new and fresh with the cookie generators aspect, while satisfying the bedwars players.

An exemple would be like adding a close billboardui that tells you where exactly is the bed and how to destroy it

there is no bed to destroy though.

Maybe after the tutorial ends display the user a menu with two images that represent how to win the game: either finish your tower OR sabotage other players.

And when it comes to sabotaging other players, you could have tough NPCs to unlock which will make it hard to sabotage them, etc etc.

Also I believe the thumbnail you have is not informative enough about your game. Perhaps have either a bed/tower with 2 hearts alive out of 3 above (or cookies if you want but heart would be more informative) so that players can understand the aspect of tower health. All that in a bedwars style so that you bring bedwars players.

I truly believed your game has the potential of thousands of CCU when playing it if only you could have the thousands of bedwars players available on the platform

When i referred to bed i mean bed/tower however you name it.

Are you trying to tell me there is no actual sabotaging others feature actually?

you can go ahead and destroy the tower progress of other players. It’s not the goal of the game tho. Because of that the tutoreial doesn’t mention it.
The goal is to focus on your own base and build your own tower. Thats what the tutorial explains.

Test both thumbnails to see which has a higher CTR.

Great idea, do that!

I have a bad feeling that something has changed (again) recently, because I’m also struggling with getting a new game into the algorithm and it’s not biting at all. Not even 2 recommendations after 25k visits (from sponsored ads mostly).

Potential reasons might be low retention and playtime stats, but the most annoying thing is that for certain games it’s extremely hard to pull good stats out of sponsored traffic.

Other people seem to have similar issues too:
