so i have been playing a lot of open world rpg games and decided to try making one myself, what are the things that make a open world rpg fun and what to avoid? thanks
You could add quests to do or daily rewards. This will make the user keep coming back for more of your game the more you entice them to return.
I’d say to try to add new aspects to the game every week. However, make sure the new features aren’t very game changing, as new players would struggle to play the game. You probably also want to make sure that the game is not repetitive, as repetitive gameplay is what breaks most RPG games.
hmm, will a lives system change the repetitive-ness? ive seen rogue lineage and deepwoken done this, but games such as verdant moon, lore game and shadovis rpg done a different approach
Can you elaborate on this? I don’t really play Roblox games often.
i think the key to making an open world game fun in general is giving the players think to do. its all about the map, you dont want any part of the map to feel meaningless or empty. your map should be well designed with recognisable areas, and every nook and crany with some sort of objective, no matter how small.
As other people said, giving the players daily and weekly objectives also help.
Make sure your gameplay is not monotonous and makes players want to keep playing too, you should decide if the focus is more on the map or more on the gameplay. Other roblox gamesl ike World//Zero are pretty nice, but the gameplay can get kinda boring because you have to grind alot, and i dont feel like the map is particularly interesting, only serves to move you between quests. Open world games biggest strenght is the exploration they allow for.
Look at this example from xenoblade 3
If you just follow the story or quests you just move trough the red line, ignoring 80% of the map. But if you want to explore there is ALOT of content there. There is even content that is deliberately above the player’s level to make them keep coming back.
You can look at games like this that do the model successfully to inspire your game
Hope this post helped
I would just look at games like Skyrim. Aside from the insane modding support, even the base game feels incredibly alive. You’re also never forced to do anything and can essentially build whatever kind of character you want. Some people go as far as coming up with character lore and roleplaying how they think their character would act (sort of like D&D).
But a true open world game isn’t cheap to make by any means. Many games just have a large and vastly empty open world that feels pointless. In fact, I would look at your game and ask if it even needs to be open world. As much as I love them, not all games need or should be open world. There are many good videos covering this topic, I would definitely recommend searching for some.
like a lives system when you die and lose all the lives you have to start over again
i dont think this is a particularly good idea
i mean, it makes the game a tiny bit more replayable…?
You might just discourage new players from joining because higher level players keep killing them, making it hard for them to level up.
