How to make the build have a friendlier look

Hello everyone, so right now I’m making a new school RP game. I have been playing around with a realistic cartoon aesthetic. I am not looking to make it all smooth. If you could help me make it friendlier that’d be great. Side Note: This is a Elementary School Roleplay so young children will be our target audience.

My overall thoughts on why this is the case is the brick texture using too much black. However, any other texture provides little to no good contrast.

I know the build is a little premature but I figured I’d solve this issue sooner rather than later.

adding white accents to the building will help it look “friendlier” since lighter colors are more welcoming. it’s hard to tell what it’s going to look like just from that photo but if you’re planning on adding foliage and other decorations it should be fine. you could add crayon pillars or something idk, depends on the look you’re going for

Make sure it’s vibrant with light colors. It makes the build seem more friendly and welcoming.

It looks a bit better but I still feel like it’s lacking.

Schools don’t necessarily have to be made with bricks. It can be made with concrete or even metal at times:

Having the school by itself isn’t all that friendly, the surrounding environment and lighting also impact how it looks. Add in a little bit on scenery and change the lighting settings to see if it can look a bit friendlier.

Lighter colours such as white and pastel (like @KoolWaterLK mentioned) indeed provide more of a friendlier aesthetic. Here is a quick list of how to make your building look friendlier.

  • Brighter/lighter colours
  • Trees & bushes help give life to the structure
  • (Cute) flowers [see above]
  • Good lighting in- and outdoor can impact the atmosphere greatly
  • Rich colours. Experiment with certain colour paletts and see what works best.
  • Good seating areas. This allows players to sit together and create a more lively atmosphere.
  • Brown paths within a little park area looks cosier (in my opinion) than very businesslike/pragmatic stone paths.
  • Try to avoid symmetry. By creating asymmetrical structures you givce the eye more interesting subjects to look at and creates a more chaotic environment. This works great with a litlte park surrounding the structure.
  • Elevate the ground. Create multiple layers in your map to walk, sit etc.
  • Cover the ceiling. You can create a very cosy look/atmosphere by having lights

These tips were mainly focused on the exterior/environment. Here are some tips for indoor:

  • Open spaces. Allow your players to look far so they can see what is going on and does not create a thread. Basically the opposite of a horror game.
  • Bright colours
  • Lots of vegitation
  • Rich and a lot of colours

I suggest to check out this place for perhaps some inspiration. It is not of the greatest quality (especially the outdoor section) but the indoor section is well made.

Instead of a dark red, try using either something more saturated or something more pastel.
