How to stop yourself from starting everything again and again?

Hello everyone  !

The title says it all, how do i stop myself from starting everything again and again ? I like to do things right, and when they are not, well I don’t really like it and tend to start from scratch. An exemple for this would be my first game being currently built, the lobby is the only thing i have kept long enough and will probably not change a lot. But for the rest, oh boy ! First problem is when i started i was just excited and wanted to start building and scripting and I didn’t even knew in which directions i’d go. And with those feelings, I started creating the first floor of my game :

But after some days on working on it, i thought it was too small, poorly built,… I wasn’t convinced and didn’t like the output so I decided to start anew, and keep the idea I had at the begining of creating a big world with a story :

This one went further and the output was ok. But then I thought : “wait, what is even the type of game I want to create, a story ? Just some quests here and there ? …” That’s when I finally got the idea on which I’m currently working on. Infinite content with a storyline and quests, and levels to be cleared. But that map (pictures you just saw) didn’t really reflect the output I wanted. So once again, A new world was born :

But guess what, after a lot of pain creating the script behind this and building all the different rooms to get my idea, once again Iwasn’t happy with the output, it was too cubic, too small, too flat,… So yeah, I did it again, and created another one :

This is where I’m today, feeling like i’m stuck somewhere and not really going anywhere to the days where my game will be done.

Only positive stuff I see from all those worlds which will be forgotten is that i got better at building and scripting. But it’s the same for Uidesign, scripts, and ideas (for example, my character selection has see 3 big versions, and i’m currently building the 4th one)… They all keep getting being reworked on and on.

So yeah, thanks for reading and if you have any advice, I’m taking all of them so giveme

I’m a victim of this. Once you get far enough, start posting on twitter or releasing your game to early access. This motivated me to finish the version I was working on because people were excited to see what would be coming.

well i think you can stop by doing something else then just be in roblox studio…
example you need to stop doing was watching youtube or other video to remove the idea from your brain

I do this a lot with scripting, and to be honest, it’s not always a bad thing. You sharpen your skills more and more because you find yourself dissatisfied with your own work. You want to make it as best as possible.

Problem is, there really is no “best” way to do things (well, for building anyways). If you keep rebuilding, you need to accept at one point that it’s never going to be absolutely the way you want it to turn out. This is something I am experiencing right now with Gui design; I’m not that good at it but I can’t spend a month after I’ve made 5 designs that look decent.

If you are just looking to sharpen your skills by doing some side project though, there really is no harm in rebuilding or redesigning. The problem is mostly in serious development that is expecting a game release. That’s my take on it

It seems like you have problems on planning, there are many ways on how to design or plan your game like drawing map and stuff. Not only these skills are acquired for game design, but also in your daily work.
Btw, I like the steam that you made, how did you made it lol?

I can relate to you all too well. I continue to struggle with this. Two things I am trying to do to get over this hurdle are 1) Things can always be improved. It’s not like I’m writing a novel where it’s going to print and I can’t change a thing once it’s out there. Yes, I don’t want to release something subpar or buggy, but I have to realize that not every single thing is going to be perfect. I can always keep improving even after the game is released. 2) I start thinking about things in phases. Maybe my ideal place or level would have a certain feature, but I know it’s going to significantly add to my dev time. I ask myself, “Is it essential to my core game?” If not, I can seriously consider moving it to version 2.

I also totally agree with @tralalah. It’s never a waste of time (I struggle with this as well), but he’s right. Development iterations only make you better.

By the way, those are beautiful builds! Keep it up!

What makes me motivated are deadlines and support. Share your game progress in media and the overwhelming support just pushes me to continue on with my project. When I set myself a deadline, I feel like I’ve failed for not hitting that deadline.
