so I think many of you know about such typical games as Anime Adventures, Tower Defence, and the all-Star Tower Defense. The question is, if you made a game like this, how would you improve it? What do you not like about this genre and what would you improve?
I am currently working on a tower defense game, and I have a few different improvements. (I won’t share my best ones, sorry.)
- Death effects. Enemies can explode, sink underground, or just fade away.
- Skill tree for players. If a player wins a certain amount of rounds, he can upgrade his starter money, or gain extra walkspeed.
- Badges. Different badges can be rewarded if a player completes a specific objective. (Beat within: Time, Beat with: Troop)
My general issue with tower defence games is the balancing (or, lack thereof) in certain cases, and the fact that theres nothing really to do while you wait for the enemies to be murdered (brutally) by your towers.
I think that maybe if theres something the player could do to help, it could be a lot more engaging?? maybe???
I don’t really know, i’m not really qualified to talk about this - I make tests, not full on games.
I can see where you’re coming from, but these don’t really add to the experience (other than n. 2).
1 is more just general polish - to make the game look nice, people don’t really pay attention to these details, and they certainly won’t keep the player in the game.
2 is a great idea. It helps balance people in the later game, and gives something the player could work towards! This is an idea I hope more tower defence games incorporate, because when you have amazing towers, the starting money sometimes wont cut it.
3 is more just for those extreme players, who want to achieve EVERYTHING. This is obviously a good idea, but not an amazing one that will make your game stand out from the rest.
I totally agree with this, but this falls in my (I won’t share my best ones, sorry.) category, so I can’t say more.
that’s perfectly fine, just saying that even though they aren’t your best suggestions, they aren’t great suggestions for making a game stand out.
I don’t think anyone is going to line up to play a new tower defence game just because funny zombie goes into floor (except me)
