I have been using lighting for several years though not the greatest I did some pretty impressive stuff. I wanna start doing really hyper-realistic lighting for my main title screen but I was having some sort of artist block and can’t think of how I can make my current lighting more realistic. It would be helpful if you guys can give me some pointers on better setting optimization in my current lighting settings for this game so far and general tips.
Settings are listed in the game files right here if you want to work on them. Ill credit you if you provide your user id if you want to help out. maplighting.rbxl (517.8 KB)
the shadows would look a lot nicer if they were softer. that or you could change the angle of the sun slightly so they dont go onto the rocks. a bit of light fog in the distance might look good too.
also, with your lighting, cooler tones should be mixed with the warmer ones in order to get a realistic effect. here it looks like you only used warm lighting, which kind of makes it too dream-like rather than realistic.
as you can see, i used a lot of warm colours. because of the browns and neutral colours i used both in the build and the lighting, the scene looks quite flat and details dont stand out as much. it looks more like a 1900s movie than something realistic.
and here is an image of the same game but with extra blue and gray lights. this is probably the worst of my works to demonstrate with lol but you can tell that there is now depth to the couch and it no longer looks flat like a drawing. the stairs in the back stand out a lot more too, which further makes the area look more full and decorated. the place is a lot more lively and looks less like a dead film tape. i didn’t get rid of the warm beige lights, i just added colder colours to compliment them.
what i suggest with your trees is to add some lights like these around the tops of the trees and hills, particularly around the side where the sun doesn’t shine. this will bring out the curves of the terrain and the texture of the trees. it will also make your shadows a bit less harsh and prevent everything from looking too yellow.
