I am making a remake of a game. Will I be able to make it public?

Hey! So about a week ago, I decided to redo a game of mine that was based off of a popular game. I created the 3d models, with the assets based off of the game. I have seen many games make fanmade versions of other games so I thought it would be okay, but now I’m not so sure. I have many ideas for this game, I just don’t want to continue putting hours of work into this if I can’t make it public, which is my fault. What do you recommend I do?

Hmm maybe you should contact Roblox and see if they can help.

Remember Pokemon Brick Bronze? It got taken down. If your game gets popular, it will probably get taken down if you use the Animal Jam name. I would change the name and change some stuff about the game. Don’t copy all of it, only some of it, and I think it’ll be good.

Going off of someone’s work and including you creative spinoff is absolutely alright. That’s called inspiration.

However, if you copy every single thing from a game (all the way to the characters and assets), then you would be in trouble.

Take Piggy for example, they used to have Peppa Pig images in their game, but they had to switch it out for copyright reasons. But instead, they created their own images using models. And the game overall is obviously based off of Peppa Pig, but the names are all altered to be different. Plus, it’s not like what Peppa Pig is, they’re using their characters in a creative saga.

But look what happened to Brickbronze since they used every one of Pokemon’s assets. It was a direct copy with nothing new added to it.

So, there is a fine line between inspiration and copying. If you are going off of a game, try to add something more to it (creative spinoff) to make it unique.

100% agree with you. Don’t use all of the things in the original game, and you’ll be good.

Short answer: Yes, but be careful.

If the assets are simply based off of the game and not actually from the game, you might be ok, depending on how specific it is (e.g. Pokemon games are still copyright struck, but nobody will be able to take you down for having a dog in your game).

Technically, fangames (anime in particular) are in a bit of a weird spot. I think that, if the studios really wanted to, they could probably take all of them down or possibly sue Roblox for hosting them on the platform knowing that the intellectual property is not owned by the game developers, but either they don’t know or they don’t care.

Either way, be careful when dealing with taking ideas from established franchises.

I think this is an interesting topic discussed, I am personally making a re-make of a ‘‘genre’’ but I think I am somewhere between 80-100% sure it won’t be striked. This genre has been around since 2013 if not earlier and ROBLOX and DISNEY ( the current owning body that have rights to the genre ) have had tons upon tons of partnerships and events together, I think if two companies partner, like Discord for i.e, it has its own ‘‘section’’ ( bear with me ), discord is shown under social links because discord and roblox and well ‘‘partnered’’. I like to think the same with events/past partnerships, ROBLOX itself has made a game relating to the genre, I am sure we can to.

Regarding Brick Bronze
Brick Bronze was a fun and entertaining game, I think its what brought some of us, definitely me to like roblox more. I am unsure if this is true, but I don’t think ROBLOX and Pokemon ( forget their company name, sorry hardcore fans!) have ever had a partnership or joint event.

Change up the name, don’t copy too many game mechanics, and just overall, don’t make it obvious.

You will have to be very careful about copyright infringement. You certainly won’t be able to name it “Animal Jam” since that name is trademarked. Make sure you are not stealing anything from the original game, that includes characters, names, and more
