I Can't Improve in Blender: How do I?

Hello, please let me know if this is the wrong topic.

I have been doing Blender on and off for a year and I can’t seem to improve, while I see people who have done it for a few months and can do amazing things with it. I’m a somewhat decent builder in Roblox but I can’t see myself having much of a future without being able to model. How can I improve my modeling skill? I have watched speed modeling videos and I’ve also watched beginner tutorials. Should I try something other than modeling?
For reference, here is my best model:

Dont compare Dont compare Dont compare Dont compare
thats my best advice, each person learns quicker or slower, we dont learn at the same speed, you need to learn the basics, we dont start off as a pro and I know it can be frustrating seeing other peoples models that we wish we could do but as I said we all learn at different paces. Youll get better eventually itll just take time, keep watching people, keep modeling, keep trying new models, keep stepping out of your comfort zone and soon youll be great!

I love your model btw!

I just don’t see my self improving, but thank you for the advice

You will slowly but surely! Trust me we all improve eventually. Using tutorials is a huge part in getting better and learning, watching others is also hugely important, if you use blender for an hour a day for 30 days in a row, take a picture of your model on day one and do the same model on day 30, im sure you will see a huge difference!

It is common knowledge that practice makes perfect, but that’s not entirely true. If you keep doing the same thing over and over again you won’t improve. To actually improve you have to go out of your comfort zone and try all sorts of different techniques. It doesn’t matter if the end product is horrible, what matters is that you learned something new.
Keep learning and keep trying.

You also wont be able to see your improvements in any quick amount of time. It takes a long time to master something, so if you want to actually measure how fast your improving try making a collage monthly to compare your progress.

I hate people that always fail and never give it another try. That’s why they can’t succeed at something. You should know that modeling/building is a work of art, and it’s something you have to know and learn a lot of it before you can make advanced buildings. Don’t expect something easy and fast to learn. Use memorizing a whole dictionary book as an example.

Dont overestimate yourself, and don’t underestimate. Try modeling things that might be harder, maybe more boring, and stuff that you have never created before. I think that a good place to learn even if you don’t consider yourself a beginner is blender guru’s chair tutorial. It is pretty easy but gets progressively more challenging and when you’re done you can use decimate and use the mesh in your game.

More confidence in yourself. You’re not gonna get anywhere with that attitude. You CAN improve in Blender. Always finish something even if it isn’t going well. Giving up before you even start is basically spending time on nothing. Watch tutorials in your off time. I’d suggest trying tutorials for things that you normally wouldn’t want to create.

Here are some examples that I think you should try,

Start at 15:25 and try to make the Magazine.

Heres an imagine you can use premium

Remember, just because something looks hard doesn’t mean it is hard and if you seem like you can’t do it, at least try your best and finish it because if you

Can I see your other models? If you have being trying to use blender for 1 year you should have alot of models

You know wich the difference on be an artist and be a programmer?

The programmation is logic
The Art is practice

Make Models, And models, and with your own experience you will improve more your skills, If you don’t know about how to control programm, I recommend see tutorials of specific things, so you can take some tools that they use for your own creations

Don’t compare yourself to other people. The reason other people’s creation looks way better than you in a shorter amount of time is most of the time because they have previous experience in modeling on another 3d software. I’ve been doing blender for only about 4 months but I think it would take at least 2 years to get to that point if you started from scratch. I have about 2+ years in roblox studio so that’s why. Some people are better at learning, andrew price (blender guru) has some great advice for modeling on blender but can be applied to about any 3d software. Also, just know practice does not necessarily mean you will improve.

I confirm
I started 5 years ago and my buildings are like a 2years experienced guy, all we have our time to learn

This is probably your issue. You need to do something conistently if you want to get good at it, as you said

I was just like you. Keep going, blender is really worth it if you practice on it. If you’re used to making unions, I recommend you use the boolean modifier, its basically like roblox’s Unions/negates. Also watch people model to get a feel on how they start, it can help

It takes practice, most of the people who have done modeling for a few months have worked for hours every day. Don’t burn yourself out on it though.

Here are some tutorials I personally used, once I started using these tutorials, I saw improvements in my modeling instantly:

I agree 100% with everyone here, do the tutorials just for the practice. The tips and tricks learned from building something unrelated to your game could give you ideas on how to improve on your own models.

I also feel that I am a better builder in Roblox than I am in Blender, but the models I create in Blender look so much better ( rounded edges, more complex meshes with better shadows). So here is my tip: build it in Roblox first, don’t go in to great detail for the Roblox build, just focus on getting the size and shape down. Next I export the parts I am working with as an .obj file. Then I import that obj file in to Blender, using the imported object as a reference, I re-create all the parts in Blender over the top of the Roblox model.

When I am done with this step, I have a full set of parts that I can then improve on. If I need to I will show/hide the imported Roblox model as a reference I can do that. Now that I have all the parts recreated in blender I will work on the finer details (beveled edges, door knobs, and extra details that you can’t easily do in Roblox.

Finally when I am finished in blender I re-import the meshes from Blender back in to my Roblox game, again using the old Roblox parts to resize the Blender back to the original sizes. To keep my total mesh count down, if some of the meshes I imported from blender are the same as the original Roblox part I will delete the mesh and keep the original Roblox part.

I hope someday that I will get better at Blender and wont need to duplicate my work, but this is a nice way to use my skills in Roblox to improve my Blender abilities.

Im pretty sure you get lazy while following a tutorial. If not, then idk why you cant improve.
Heres a modeling series which YOU MUST follow along, and do whatever he says to do.
Grant Abbitt’s Well Tutorial Series
Follow along this tutorial, and do whatever he instructs to do. Finish the whole series in a span of 1 week. Dont try to finish the series in quickest time. After that, I’m 100% sure you will learn a lot of things and then, using that knowledge, take a random picture from google and recreate it in blender.
Remember: DONT MAKE THINGS ALL OUT OF YOUR IMAGINATION. ALWAYS USE REFERENCE PICTURES UNTIL YOU THINK YOUR IMAGINATION AND SKILLS HAVE BECOME GODLY!!! (which will obviously takes months or even years to develop) So ya, always use reference pics, even for making the simplest of things…
If you do it, feel free to post it in here stating your progress ^^

If you don’t think you want to do blender then try something else and go back to blender if you still enjoy blender. I went from basic modeling then I got bored then I started scripting and got bored again, so now I make low poly builds. I’m not encouraging you to stop doing blender.

I am more interested in Blender animation and GFX than modeling, but modeling is a good skill to have.
