I have some game-dev questions

Hello everyone,

I’m wondering to those working on a game, how many hours do you put per day? How much time did it take you to get where you are now? Do you use techniques that make the game-creating process easier? Currently, I’m using free models, deleting the scripts and making my own because I’m only interested in the scripting part of game development. I found scripts and plugins on the devforum to make the scripting process easier. Is this a good technique? Whenever I make something using free models, the models aren’t aligned perfectly, so I’m thinking maybe I shouldn’t use free models because they’re scaled differently from the others. One last question, do you think it’s better or worse to work with a partner/multiple partners?

Thank you.

I always do everything by myself. Even if it looks horrible (the builds) - It gives the game like an originality. Per day, I spend like 2 - 5 hours on the games I work for. I use multiple plugins, like datastoreEditor to manage the datastores. Archimedes for circles and round stuff.

Around 2-4 hours, and I don’t really have a big schedule, I develop when I feel like it. I’ve been working since around the start of 2021. And free models are good for beginners, they help you learn, but as time goes on you should lean farther away from them.

I will try to give you as complete an answer as i can, because as a solo developer i can relate.

I used to spend about 15 min a day… but thats because i wasnt trying to figure out something new. If you are tackling a new concept or reach an obstacle it could very well go up. This number could easily be hours.

Yes, set small goals so you know what you are doing with your time, otherwise you could go many different directions and never finish anything, or end up doing a poor job on it.

Excellent technique. Reading the roblox API on something is invaluable… i cant stress that enough.

This is something you will learn in building or modeling… how to scale/fix/repair/scratch existing models to suit your needs. Usually ive found if there isnt something i like that i can improve on, then i start from scratch… but why start from scratch if a model is exactly what you’re looking for.

Hope this helps you.

Atleast 2 hours per day.

Well, if you mean the time it took me to get to where I am today, then the answer is 2 years.

Yes, I sort of develop my own tools so I can aid myself when making my own projects.

If you understand the contents in them… then yeah, I’d say so!
You can learn a lot from reading in the DevForum.

I personally like working by myself.
Is it stressful? Yeah, but do I get to decide every feature I want in the game and be responsible for polishing every aspect while also crafting it on a way it looks absolutely amazing to the eyes? Yeah.

I develop for 2-4 hours a day during the week and then possibly 1 on Saturday but I take off on Sunday. I use numerous plugins like @Ratzifutzi said Archimedes and rain editor I also since I’m a UI designer mainly use UI plugins such as UI corner. When I first started developing I used free models. They are perfect to learn the build aspect from. (I wouldn’t use the scripts. Or learn from them they aren’t very reliable) when you are a beginner. I used to dev for like 15 minutes a day usually only doing yt tutorials and stuff. Now the number has gone up trendously and since I work in a group of we have a update and I fall behind on my tasks it could be 5 or 6 hours a day. I personally like working in a group. However it all goes down to a few simple questions.

  1. Do you do well in a group setting/ are you easy to work with

  2. Do you want all the Robux or a certain percent.

I know questioon 2 is like obvious but sometimes it’s better to work with a group or a partner that can do things you can’t do just because you can produce a better product and earn more overall.

I hope this helped and I answered your questions. I’ve been told I go off track a lot.

Good Luck on your Journey!
