I need Constructive Feedback - GFX

Hello, this is my first time writing a post on these forums, I’m glad to be apart of the community now.

I’m looking to grow my GFX skills, and just improve on a daily basis. I’ve been tracking my progress on a Deviantart, and trying to do small sales to people at the recruiting plaza and social connections here and there:

You can view my work here: Rgator15 - Hobbyist, Digital Artist | DeviantArt

I’ve been watching YouTube videos and seeing what other people make here in the forums community for ideas. I’ve watched many YouTube tutorials and experimented a lot with my GFX to try to improve. (Spent 8 hours alone on the Police GFX in my Deviant trying and learning new things. As you can see I learned to add textures from my design before that and added in some effects through Photoshop.)

Does anybody have any suggestions on what I could research and add to my designs down the road to improve quality, or just anything in general to work harder on? I know I have a long way to go, I’ve only been doing this for 3 days now and feel like I’ve learned a lot. I use Cinema 4D and Photoshop.

Thank you, and I appreciate all feedback given. I’m very motivated to hear from people and learn

Hi, welcome to the forums!

WOW! For only designing for 3 days, your work is incredible!
I do think the renders could use a bit of a touch up, some of them seem to be a little dark for a certain part of the scene.

I would recommend just keep practicing. That’s how I learned most of my gfx skills (I’m definitely no quality designer, but I haven’t decided to continue designing gfx).
Play around with the render settings (or lookup ways to improve renders) and try it out to see the results.

Stick with it, you’ll see some great improvements! Good luck!

For only designing for 3 days, this is pretty good, you’re learning very quickly. However, there are some severe flaws in your artwork.
Now, I won’t be listing flaws that are specific to one artwork, but those that I see throughout most, if not, all of them.

  • Posing. Your posing is EXTREMELY stiff, as you do not bend the legs or chest and usually only the arms. Posing is what gives your artwork depth and meaning, so it really brings down the quality of the piece if not done right.

  • Lighting. You appear to use the same lighting set up every piece, and it just looks generally bland and not that good. Try using HDRIs from https://hdrihaven.com to spice up your lighting and give it more of a photorealistic look.

  • Scene Setup and Texturing. Your scenes are very empty, and there’s not much happening in them. For example, in your “Work for a Border Protection Group” piece, there’s nothing much but some ground, poles, trees, barricades, and a building. Usually this will be enough to fill up your scene, but you chose an angle that does not showcase all this correctly. Moreover, texturing. The ground isn’t well textured, and is lacking normal mapping and roughness maps. Moreover, your characters are lacking bump and reflection.

TL;DR: Use normal and roughness maps on your textures. Choose better angles, don’t leave ur scenes empty, Use HDRIs for dynamic lighting, and use a rig and make your poses less stiff.

It may seem like I’m bashing you, but these are key points that you need to fix in order to be able to sell your art and become a better artist as a whole.

Thank you so much, I will definitely look into the HDRIs now. I will definitely do my best to put more detailing into the scene setup and texturing. I use a basic bone rig I found off YouTube is that what everyone else uses, or is there a better version out there?
