So, this is a weird one and I’m unsure if this is the right category, but I figured it was a good idea to bring it up considering that yesterday I got bonked with my first ever warning since I started playing in 2008 over some Kirby fanart I made and uploaded as a decal years ago.
I’m the only remaining team member on a game called Steven Universe Roleplay, which, contrary to its name, does not actually let you play as Steven Universe characters; instead, it’s a gemsona roleplay with an early precursor to modern in-game avatar editors. I decided to fix some bugs recently but I’m avoiding throwing myself into actual development until I have the blessing of the original creator of the game, Clavichord, and answers on where it stands copyright-wise.
Here’s where it gets really weird. I also knew Clavichord outside of Roblox for years, and over Twitter I watched him become a professional animator, and a coworker of Steven Sugar, the brother of Steven Universe’s creator, Rebecca Sugar. In hindsight, it was kinda obvious that he’d had industry connections, which leaves me wondering if he actually had a license, formal or not. I do know that the Crewniverse has always supported fan projects including those on Roblox, but I’m less certain what Cartoon Network’s official stance is.
I sent Clavichord an email asking about my concerns, but have not gotten a response. What is the recommended course of action here?
