The description includes the word “eskimo”, which is commonly seen as an offensive term to the Inuit and Yupik people. It’s currently believed the word came from term “askimew” (one who nets snowshoes), but the previous definition as “eater of raw meat” has long been used as an insult to frame native Alaskans as uncivilized.
On the Alaska Native Language Center, Lawrence Kaplan shares some of the names preferred by people living in Arctic regions such as Alaska, Canada, and Greenland.
Considering the description is quoting the classic 1930’s song Winter Wonderland, it’s clear that the intent wasn’t to offend anyone, but I’d imagine Roblox would prefer to update it anyway based on the removal of the word from the Arctic Climber bundle.
In the kindest way possible, it’s almost like singing a Christmas song and saying the word “gay.” (Showing or characterized by cheerfulness and lighthearted excitement; merry.)
This was obviously not the intent, we’re making mountains out of molehills.
This should be changed, as it could be considered racist, roblox is very inconsistent about these things though as seen with them taking asian conical hats offsale almost randomly
As of three hours ago the item “Igloo’s” description has changed to a new version of what it says down under. A lot better than what it was.
However, I personally think that the old way to address it was alright as these days we can take anything out of it’s context what it used to mean vs the new meaning of it. Should’ve kept the old, but the new is okay too.
Plus, the intent that they had for it probably wasn’t what they were thinking of exactly, so no intentional harm done.
