[IMPORTANT] how to not get art stolen

To all Artist whether 2D and 3D

Hi there, I go by Xanz but everyone calls be pink so I’m pinkXanz
Correct me if im wrong but artist are the most prone to getting scammed on the forum.
There is now a trend of people saying :[HIRING] Artist needed 1k robux
but the end it being someone who will end up stealing your work after you are done
I have had one of my friends experience this and i have seen recently a guy with a lot of
reviews exposing of him as a scammer

How to not get scammed/art stolen
Put various middle opacity watermarks and remove after payment and really put a lot
Put explicit words on the art as watermark so that it does not go through roblox moderation system
Put annoyingly big watermarks
Put Watermark that says stolen Art from (your user)

Hope this helped some beginner artist and also maybe professional/experienced artist
Stay safe

Good tips, but keep in mind people that you only really need to put watermarks if you are putting the images online. If you are just making an image for someone else just put your name faintly around the middle of the picture, that way they can’t crop your name out. And never give someone an image until they pay first. Give them a preview with a bigger watermark on it, then wait for them to pay and give them the one with a smaller watermark.

I’m not an artist, even though I wish I had the ability to draw, but nonetheless I can understand the frustration of having art work stolen by people.

That said, I think there needs to be a balance made between protecting your work and providing a clear preview of your work before giving the client your completed work. I agree with some of the suggestions you’ve made to protect your work but some of them I disagree with or think is over the top.

Yes, you should add watermarks that are not massively impacting the display of the art work and this can be achieved by making sure your watermark is distinct and overlaps different coloured portions of the art work so it cannot just be cropped out or replaced by a single color.

If you’re worried about presenting your work and don’t want it directly uploaded to Roblox without your permission, Roblox legally have to take down copyrighted work if you submit a DMCA takedown request. You automatically have copyright of any work you create, as long as you can prove you are the original author of the copyrighted work.

Now, I have no experience in doing art work or otherwise presenting it to a client but if I was to make for example a series of drawings, I would record a slide show of those drawings and send the client a video that contains them all, with all the included distinct but otherwise complex watermarks.

Wow, You might not be an artist but the sympathy is there , and thank you about the DMCA stuff.
I use my methods depending with the person , I know it is not right to judge someone by their avatar but if a see a common default skin (bacon hair) that raises an eye brow, So i have to use the explicit watermarks because they might manage to steal the art worked days on and get away with it since it will be hard to track down where my art was used, unless i come across the game/group in the case that they do not use the art for a game/group on the account that i reached out on.
Im well experienced with photoshop and cropping is not the only to remove watermarks, putting watermarks especially just making the opacity low is not that secure since i can brighten up and darken it at certain parts to make it none existent
But its still good to see that even developers out of the artist genre are sympathising with this issue

DMCA takedowns are not easy to file, and often require a couple hundred dollars ($199.00 USD) in processing fees. I recommend only using that as a last resort, and to not rely on it.

You’re able to submit a DMCA to Roblox via the official support form: https://www.roblox.com/support

This does not cost any money and should include the following:

  • Your name, address and email contact information

  • Information about the copyrighted work and/or trademark claimed to have been infringed

  • Information about the content on Roblox’s website that you claim infringes your intellectual property

  • A description of where the claimed infringing content is found on the Roblox website i.e. links to said assets

  • A statement by you that you have good faith that the disputed use is not authorized by the intellectual property owner

  • A statement by you, made under penalty of perjury, that the above information in your DMCA notice is accurate and that you are authorized to act on behalf of the copyright holder.

Although this is completely free to submit to Roblox, it requires some legal knowledge. There are resources online that can assist with this.

Side-note about sending DMCA notices to Roblox

I should mention, to anyone that may read this in the future, when you’re submitting the DMCA notice, please consider Roblox’s Terms of Service. You’re not able to submit a notice to take down “copied” free models, etc. as by publishing to the Roblox toolbox, you give up ownership of those assets as you’ve made them public domain.

If you’re wanting to share code and retain intellectual property rights, the best way to do that is to share your code via GitHub under an open source licence governing the use of your project.

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer and this is not intended to be official legal advice. This information is an assumption based on previous experience with Roblox’s DMCA system.
