In need of feedback on the current state of my game

So I’ve only been working on this 2D side scroller shooter for about half a month now and I’m pretty new to coding. Since I’ve been working on it non stop, I’m a bit drained and out of ideas (short term, not long term). I just need some honest criticism, advice, and ideas. (It’s best if you try it with a pal.)

Thanks <3

Woah! I was so amazed when I joined the game. It was seriously good.

Here’s some personal feedback, from someone who doesn’t understand how coding/building works but more from a player!

The Edit Character Section - the colors feel… really off? Like, when editing the torso, when I click the black color it turns out grey on the torso. I know that colors changes depending the texture, lighting, etc! But the color differences was so big (to me) that I felt like I had to go through all of the colors before I could find any color I would like.

The stats feature is kinda cool! But it would be better if all of the stats were on one page rather than in sections that you had to scroll through. (So being able to see all your stats at once.)

I’ve never saw a game with a mute button for in game music and whatnot, so that was actually very cool! I really liked that the best.

I played with my friends + one stranger joined. So we had 4 players joining. My friend said their feedback was that the guns were a bit laggy (They seemed fine to me but I’m not used to gun games) and that the lobby was hard to go through. I actually liked the lobby!

It was actually so much fun playing I had to remember I was writing something. It’s def going to be a game I’ll play with my friends a lot.

Update: Also, when you die and kill a person at the same time, the text overlaps each other.

I didn’t play for very long, but here was my first impression:

I think the game is really good! Especially since you’re new to scripting.

I feel like there’s not enough going on with the camera; Perhaps add a little shake when you shoot your gun, and when you move your mouse around the screen, slightly move the camera more towards where your mouse is, which I think could lead to some interesting gameplay.

Example: https://gyazo.com/9aebfb71ba4dd235b69a5c58638e7ede
You can obviously change the multiplier so it either moves your camera more or less in the direction of the mouse

I’m not really in to shoot-em-up games, but I think this has a TON of potential.

Thanks for the ideas btw. Still trying to learn camera manipulation, I’m not too fond of it. The 2D camera was fairly easy due to Roblox having a nice wiki article on it. I have to admit, I’m not completely new to coding. I’ve had prior knowledge beforehand with college classes and working on little side projects years ago, but basically since it’s been about 5 years since I used lua I’m fairly “new”. I feel as if my UI needs a bit more work, like how @aelzc said, it was a bit confusing to navigate. It’s also very bland and unappealing, but I don’t really have any ideas on how to fill the empty space.

Overall, I thank both of you for the reviews and I hope to take some of this advice and put it into action!

I have since drastically updated my game from when I initially created this topic and would like for some feedback on its current state once again. Mainly because I recently began getting about 3 dislikes per 1 like, and I’m not understanding why. Any help?

Some suggestions:

The newsletter UI shouldn’t be as transparent as it is, it’s very hard to read for me. Maybe add a more solid background to it?

Another issue is maybe speed up reload just a bit? Not a lot, but a little bit. There’s a very awkward pause when it’s me and the other person just jumping around while we both reload. Or add a melee/secondary gun to avoid these awkward pauses?

Also in regards of reloading, I saw there’s no reloading animation. Maybe add that to jazz up the game?

Also, it’s a small preference of mine but maybe add a background the stats? Or add some lines? To me it just looks very blank.

The coins/cents photo looks kind of stretched and/or a bit blurry? Not sure if this is just me or not.

The coins in the shop really look stretched to me.

Thank you for the UI improvement suggestions! I’ll start working on fixing those little hiccups soon. Other than that, and the awkward pauses in fights, are there any other gameplay improvements I could make? (Besides just visuals, I mean core gameplay)

Great game, however UI needs to be improved, and S keybind is really annoying. Overall game looks great, also I am not sure if the gun having collisions is purposely made, because it collides with objects making a bit harder to move and jump near walls and ladders. The side buttons are in chat area, you can move chat or the buttons.

I’ll make custom keybinds an option so you guys don’t have to ever worry about awkward binds. Also, gun collisions? The can collide is off for all of my guns. I don’t know what you mean by that. The chat and leaderboard etc, I’m most likely going to soon completely remove and make my own. Also, could you elaborate on what aspects of the UI needs to be improved. Is it in game or lobby?

To be honest, I had a lot of fun! Killing is a lot more smoother. In general I’m not used to 2D but it’s still a fun experience overall.

The only thing I struggled with was when jumping off of high places I would auto crouch, which is to add realism I’m assuming - It didn’t ruin the experience but it too a while to get used to.

Very good! I actually really love this.

My suggestions:

  • Improve the UI design for the main menu
  • Make the character change direction when they hit A or D key
  • Put some arrows to indicate where to go

I love the style of this game, the colors and all!

Very excellent work.
I must say I am pretty good at this game, and I enjoyed it for the 5 minutes I was there.

Although, as a MacBook user, I felt as though the shift/crouch option was starting to get annoying, which brewed up to my leave. If you hit spacebar, it’d redo the action and go back into walk speed again, the control button on here is goofy.

The notification at the very start reminded me of phantom forces, I’d recommend a solid background.

I’d also union the map (not all together) but the platforms you can notice the parts that were used and they were very noticeable.

Although, it was a very neat game and I think it’ll take you places as you are a beginner.
