Introducing ScriptingHelpers.org, the new way to get your ROBLOX Lua questions answered

I’m happy to introduce Scripting Helpers, a new ROBLOX website specifically designed to get your Lua questions answered. It’s been in development for a few months now, and I’m finally happy to say that I can release it to the public in beta. We have many features similar to OSQA and Stack Overflow, which is why asking your questions on ScriptingHelpers.org instead of the Scripting Helpers Forum is better.

The main developer and website owner is myself, Kenetec. Our website manager and social media manager is 18cwatford, and our blog manager is MrNicNac. I’m very happy to have these people on the team. If you’re interested in helping out as a community moderator, please send me a message on ROBLOX.

Let me know what you think! I am open to constructive criticism, but please keep in mind that this is beta software, and it’s not 100% finished yet. Certain details, like “Sort by Unanswered” aren’t working yet.

One more thing: Please remember that asking questions for the sake of adding information is encouraged! Even if you know the answer, asking a question that hasn’t been asked before will help others get the information more quickly, which is what we want.

I hope that this website will help further the ROBLOX community in a positive way. Please check it out, and tell me what you think!

I see a lot of potential in this. Copying stack overflow is a good idea.

This is really cool, but could you explain how this is better than just using the Scripting Helpers forum?

ScriptingHelpers.org provides an organized means of asking questions and getting answers. The best answers rise to the top, and bad & spam answers sink into the depths of the page, eventually being deleted it they pass the deletion threshold of 50 downvotes.

The standard forum layout for asking questions is just no good. A long chain of responses can be confusing for those who need help, and also adds unneeded noise to the conversation. It’s great for discussion, but not so much for a Q&A format.

The weighted question and answer system really shines when it comes to multiple ways of doing something, but one method being “better” than the others. Since the one with the most upvotes will rise to the top, we can encourage good programming practices in the ROBLOX community, as opposed to the current situation, where most people will choose the first answer and be done with it.

There are many more reasons why SH.org is better, but I think I’ve listed the main ones.

one concern… on the login page it says:
“Email or ROBLOX Username

I think it should just say Username instead because it may make a few users think that they’re able to access the site with their Roblox info.

edit: or something… idk… I just feel like some players might think they’re already signed up for the site

I love it! I’ll never go at the normal scripting helpers anymore.

One “glitch”: you get a notification of your own comments.

EDIT: Could you setup a rss feed for the questions? I would love to get a notification on a new question!

What happened to LuaLearners.org? It’s kind of… dead

Beautiful site design.
Just thought it throw that out there.

Maybe add an api to allow interaction from within games? I think it would be a great idea if you’re able to pull it off.

How would it work and what would it do? I don’t understand; ScriptingHelpers is like Stack Overflow but for ROBLOX Lua.

The one thing I don’t like about this actually, is the fact that some users that are using the site are receiving code from users and then running to the Scripting Helpers forum on ROBLOX asking why “their” code isn’t working.

Still, it’s a nice idea.

Interesting idea… hopefully it wont be such a massive failure like LuaLearners. Though, you may want to fix something:

That search button is awfully close to the Help button. The overall design could use a little more contrast too.

I’ve noticed that copying the script also copies line numbers. Could prove to be inconvenient when copying it to try run and debug the script for the guy who’s asking.

This is how the page looks: http://puu.sh/71dgb.png

Please make sure you are using a browser which supports web fonts

There is a copy button when you hover over the code in the top right corner. Simply click it to copy the code to your clipboard.

So pretty much this is a stackoverflow-like site for ROBLOX?

That tends to happen when you don’t use the handy dandy copy to clipboard button.

Ah, sorry… I missed that.

I really like this site by the way - I’ll be using it instead of the roblox forums from now on
