I’m happy to introduce Scripting Helpers, a new ROBLOX website specifically designed to get your Lua questions answered. It’s been in development for a few months now, and I’m finally happy to say that I can release it to the public in beta. We have many features similar to OSQA and Stack Overflow, which is why asking your questions on ScriptingHelpers.org instead of the Scripting Helpers Forum is better.
The main developer and website owner is myself, Kenetec. Our website manager and social media manager is 18cwatford, and our blog manager is MrNicNac. I’m very happy to have these people on the team. If you’re interested in helping out as a community moderator, please send me a message on ROBLOX.
Let me know what you think! I am open to constructive criticism, but please keep in mind that this is beta software, and it’s not 100% finished yet. Certain details, like “Sort by Unanswered” aren’t working yet.
One more thing: Please remember that asking questions for the sake of adding information is encouraged! Even if you know the answer, asking a question that hasn’t been asked before will help others get the information more quickly, which is what we want.
ScriptingHelpers.org provides an organized means of asking questions and getting answers. The best answers rise to the top, and bad & spam answers sink into the depths of the page, eventually being deleted it they pass the deletion threshold of 50 downvotes.
The standard forum layout for asking questions is just no good. A long chain of responses can be confusing for those who need help, and also adds unneeded noise to the conversation. It’s great for discussion, but not so much for a Q&A format.
The weighted question and answer system really shines when it comes to multiple ways of doing something, but one method being “better” than the others. Since the one with the most upvotes will rise to the top, we can encourage good programming practices in the ROBLOX community, as opposed to the current situation, where most people will choose the first answer and be done with it.
There are many more reasons why SH.org is better, but I think I’ve listed the main ones.
The one thing I don’t like about this actually, is the fact that some users that are using the site are receiving code from users and then running to the Scripting Helpers forum on ROBLOX asking why “their” code isn’t working.
I’ve noticed that copying the script also copies line numbers. Could prove to be inconvenient when copying it to try run and debug the script for the guy who’s asking.
