Is copying a map from another game allowed?

Hello! I have a question.
Am I allowed to copy maps in games outside of Roblox without their permission? (I build it myself, but I basically remake it to look exactly alike or almost similar) I have seen other games copy maps, but I do not know if they asked for permission or not.

What do you mean copy other peoples maps if you mean taking there build and making it in your game adding improvements and such that is ok just change a lot of the builds adding your personal touches (also make sure to give that person credit). But if you mean hacking to get someones map that will get you banned, and is against robloxe Tos.

You should probably ask before using. But I would say not allowed like @Bli_Pan said.

Is plagiarism allowed? No
You’re asking if it’s ok to plagiarize. On a developer forum… Let that sink in for a minute :woman_facepalming:

Well, it is not allowed but if you take a inspiration from them than they’ll allow you to copy.

No… this isn’t okay, especially if you are looking for acceptance from players who expect content that isn’t lacking.

I think it depends on the situation, if you are RECREATING the game in roblox: Definitely NOT. If you are lets say being inspired by a building from another game, I’d go for it!

There is a difference between inspiration and copying, but Im sure you can be inspired from and use a design technique used somewhere else, but if your FULLY re-creating it; Thats probably not allowed without consent.

This is honestly a touchy subject, while morally it’s not okay. Legally? It’s fine. If you aren’t using any direct assets, you technically are allowed to do anything.

There’s many cases of games on Roblox ripping on entire maps, and even gameplay mechanics from AAA games. Especially in the FPS genre.

The biggest concern you should keep in mind is your reputation, and how the community will view you. If you copy maps, and other things from other games, you most likely won’t have the greatest reputation in the community.

If it was legally right, you wouldn’t have things like Digital Millennial Copyright Act…

No, copying maps isn’t allowed. Magnet Simulator was taken down once for this reason.

Legally, if they aren’t using any direct assets, they can get away with it on Roblox afaik. A few Roblox games used recreation of CSGO maps for a long time. If it’s a recreation, it’s bit of a gray area. If it’s 1:1 replica, then I could see some legal trouble possible.

It’s against DMCA if the map is exactly the same, the original creator of the map can file a DMCA complaint form and get your game taken down. It’s not really a Roblox rule, more of an United States law.

I can see that if it’s exact. I still believe it’s a gray area if no direct assets are being used. (aka, up to the staff member reviewing the DMCA claim)

Anyways, best practice would be to make your own map, take inspiration from others, but make enough changes to where it’s unique.

It’s very unlikely he can copy the map brick by brick down to the exact sizes of the parts. However, you can use a map for inspiration and it can look similar, just change it up a bit so it’s different. You wouldn’t want to have the same map anyways, it helps you stand out.

Hello there,

Taking assets from other games is obviously not allowed.

Every game asset, in basically any game, is protected by It’s own individual law.
That’s why copyright exists, so it is basically taking a whole game, then slapping it into a place, and publishing it to Roblox, and maybe even earning money for that.

Contact the game maker individually to get the permission to use their assets on Roblox, or remake the game, by changing basically everything, but keeping the game concept. Just like the owner of Robot64 did for example, which is originally supposed to be Super Mario 64, just with a whole different storyline, and with different characters, textures and maps, and even a different name.

I hope this kind of helped as well.

Sincerely,

My take on the situation is that you are allowed to take inspiration from another map if you build it on your own and don’t completely take the concept. But if you take the map or make it exactly like the one you’re using as an example, it would most likely not be allowed.

Assuming you don’t rip any assets (meshes, textures) and create everything yourself, then yes, it is allowed. I think there’s a general misconception in this thread, as few people seem to realize that you explicitly said,

“I build it myself, but I basically remake it to look exactly alike or almost similar)”

Okay, thank you. I have decided that I will try to stay away from remaking maps the same way, but I will still get some inspiration from maps in other games.
