Is it alright to make a game about Isandlwana? (Basically will people interpreted it as racist)

  1. What do you want to achieve? Keep it simple and clear!
    Hey!
So I’m making a game about the battle of Isandlwana and since one side is mostly black people (If you don’t know about the Zulu-Anglo war, it can be found here) and was wondering if it can be made, if you didn’t read the article, the Zulus won the battle (Who are black and may consider it racist because you aren’t on there side). I don’t want to be racist.
  2. What is the issue? Include enough details if possible!
Is it possible to make this in the TOS and safe for the community?
  3. What solutions have you thought of so far?
Not sure. I fear I’ll get it taken down because it could be considered “racist” or at least serve backlash from the community.

I don’t believe it will be considered as “racist” because again, you’re only portraying an event IRL. And plus, I don’t think it will flag Roblox’s moderation system.

However, since it is a battle, you might wanna limit the amount of violence in it.

Back in the day there used to be bans for games involving axis vs ally depictions of WWII. The war was fine but the uniforms/insignias/references/imagery in general involving a certain axis power was a no-go, since they were received poorly by the community and I’m sure Roblox wouldn’t have appreciated the press from players playing under their flag. Maybe consider omitting certain imagery if this war involved a similar political ideology

Yeah, I’m not planning to add gore. There was artillery and bayonets, however I’m not planning to add people exploding or such (Back then, they used shells that exploded) there is also a small use of rockets (proper military rockets) that got run over by the Zulus. I think only 1 hit, and the other missed. They then just got ran over (it was only 5 people, and only 2 had a sword to defend themselves vs around 500 of them)

adding onto what @/MP3Face said, try removing certain aspects of the game that could be interpreted as extreme violence/war. make it a lot more metaphorical. you’ll basically dodge the tos flags this way. e.g instead of making one side black and the other white, make them something ridiculous like red and blue. your game can’t get banned this way because any evidence of it connecting to a war of race will seemingly be coincidental lol

Hmm. I have seen games depict Rorke’s Drift, a battle that happened the same day isandlwana happened. This was because they were connected, and since The British is majority white people, it was White vs Black. Also, the main part of the game is about this, and the Zulus won. The other 2 battles they lost, though.

In other words, I don’t think your game will get taken down for the reason you stated in the OP. I think it will get taken down for a different reasons.

It’s not a tragic event, for what I know. It’s a real battle and the Zulus were actually defending there land. The British were the ones who failed, they were technically the intruders. It’s also not a tragic event, it happened in 1879, and was because of lack of planning and ammunition deployment. I am not creating it with intention to mock, simply entertaining and spreading information about what happened.

I understand that and I’m not accusing you of that. I’m simply giving my opinion that all battles and wars that contain casualties are considered tragic events.

Oh. If ROBLOX does that, it’s kinda stupid, that’s exactly what wars are about, pretty much.

According to the Term of Use of roblox it is forbidden to make a game about a real event such as a battle.

Are you sure? I can link 2 games right now about Rorke’s Drift which happened in the same war, same people, except the British actually won, instead. Why would that be enforced on mine yet leaves games about D-Day alone?

If I report that game you will be banned.
(I’m not going to do that)

How does that make sense tho? Ban the game about the year 1879 where things were much less brutal then in 1945 where people got machine gunned and exploded by landlines? There are literal serious groups about wars, yet, there still there. How would I be the one to get banned? I’m not sure that rule is enforced, but it’s a stupid one.

roblox’s terms of use are like the constitution. if you want, do it the same but under your responsibility. you can end up banned forever.

I’m not sure if this is true. I’m not using politics, just having a backstory and stuff. Not ever going to mention the telegram of disarming the Zulu’s army, just have like a “Your entire family was apart of the military. You Grandpa was even at Waterloo!” Thing.

Tragic events are more so considered to be involving innocent loss of life, which is why examples such as war crimes and domestic terrorism are included, roblox is against glorification of human rights violations, a war, despite your own interpretation, is not considered a tragic event, as it does not fall under these categories, there would only be an issue if they wanted to include things that explicitly showed innocent, non participating parties being harmed through the event, (events such as the atomic bomb, Japanese invasion of Nanking, etc). Then there would be an issue, if they are not attempting to create a hyper realized depiction of war, and are attempting to create a cartoonish depiction of the battle (which is what I assume they intend), they should be fine.

It’s better to read the Term of Use before making a game.
Especially Roblox Community Standards.

The issue with the rule you’re citing is that it does not explicitly state that any conflict is prohibited, only human tragedies, I’m not sure that an armed conflict can be considered a tragedy if no bystanders lives were lost.

To be honest, there was innocent deaths because people camped nearby, tho, I’m no where close to even thinking of adding it, and it was only around 2-5 people died. Only the people who were in a military, And some fictional characters, will be present in battles. According to Wikipedia, There was no evidence of bystanders being wounded or killed, and if I’m right, people would prioritise innocent deaths over military deaths.
