Is my game boring?

I’ve been working on my game for 5 months now. And now that I have released a 80 percent finished version of my game, people just aren’t playing it. Half of them make it to the first level, 80 percent of those who finished the first level make it to the second level, and around 15 percent make it to the third level. Is this due to the small sample size, or is the game genuinely boring?

I tried it out and think it is really fun. Reminded me of a game I use to play when I was younger on a web browser. If I had to guess it depends on who has seen the game and if they want to play with friends or not. For me, I don’t really play games on Roblox anymore outside of very specific community group events so I don’t see me playing much despite it being very fun. Secondly if I did play a game, I’d want to play a game I can play with other people I talk to on the platform.

My other theory is if you were to run ads and attract a younger audience a lot of them would be captivated by it.

This game is definitely not based off the game you are talking about  Totally. Okay, this is good to hear. I’ve gotten mixed reports on the game. One of them that really stuck with me was that it was “such a niche game that i doubt you’d find success with it”. I think I might have to try out your theory lol.

I don’t necessarily think that it’s boring. You might want to add a full-on tutorial with a seperate level etc. as there are quite a few things to do, which some Players could be confused about.

You might want to self-advertise and make short video content on social media platforms like TikTok or YouTube, to attract a larger group of audiences to come try your game.

Added a full on tutorial with seperate level

I’m hoping this will improve retention rates
Edit: oh also added the Surface Finder tool.

From the thumbnail alone, wasn’t this a flash game or something? I remember something like this existing before.

So, after listening to everyone’s feedback I added three imporant features:

Feedback questionaire:

Brand new full seperate level tutorial (with story)

AND FINALLY…
A play next level button. This way people don’t have to load in different games twice, and they only load in once.

PLEASE GIVE ME MORE FEEDBACK I PROMISE I ADD IN MOST OF EVERYTHING YOU GUYS SAY

Why i can’t actually skip this boring story which is not even translated for children that might don’t know english at all? The “intro” already makes my brain keep saying to me “leave, leave pls”

Nevermind, The game is so incomprehensible that I thought it was a cutscene to the beginning of the game, why make the tutorial and cutscene as if the first two levels of the game?
Also there no start over button if I want to restart the round, but there is reset button?

For context, I played this game up to the first level with the 3 flag(?) achievement.

This game is pretty unique since not too many of this type of game is on Roblox, it reminds me of some older games like Worms. Definitely have potential, but definitely need some polishing.

Some suggestions:

  • Add a system where players can click to move onto the next dialogue much quickly
  • Maybe consider switching the dialogue ui to more of a modern textbox at the bottom of the screen?
  • Music seems to be muted when I attempt to replay the level
  • I’m not sure if this is the same with other levels, but enemies should have more than one hp rather than getting one shotted
  • On top of that, displace the enemy after they get hit so the player will require to re-aim, adding a challenging, but fun to use more skill.

All in all, the game will reach certain audiences, but there needs to be a bit more artsy and some sort of intensity to get the attention of many players on Roblox.

So,

  • Add Translation

  • Add reset button in the main GUI instead of when you complete a level?

I don’t know what you mean by the rest? I’m sorry?

  • Fix music bug

No, the enemies all get one shotted. I’m too deep to change that now. But that doesn’t mean I won’t try though.

Why make levels and tutorials with a lighthouse-like cutscene and put them together? I did not realize at first that I clicked on the cutscene and not on the game, because of this I already want to give a negative evaluation

If we want to diversify the game, we need to add killing not with one hit, and when the bullet hits the enemy enemy is thrown off, and he goes to the original place on the boat (as in the original game).

I had a lot of fun playing this game, and I could tell that a lot of hard work was put into it! I have a few suggestions regarding making the game more engaging.

Note: I’m not a professional, but I am a player and a fellow dev

Upgrading:

  • When I’m talking about upgrading, what I’m talking about is the player gaining something that that player keeps when entering other levels. That could be anything from gaining extra people, to whatever else.

  • It takes a while before the player is even able to gain an extra person on their team. On top of making that happen sooner, you could instead give players more control by allowing them to earn some currency. This currency could allow the player to upgrade something. The currency could be anything from coins to kills.

Mechanics:

  • As the levels progressed I noticed that they were now rocks in my path, making the game harder. While this is great, giving the player a greater challenge, I think that this should be introduced a little earlier. I’ll quote this:
  • I believe that this may partially be because the rocks aren’t introduced until much later, when it should maybe be introduced in level 2 or level 3. I think that there should also be other barriers preventing you from winning other than rocks, because that can start to get repetitive.

First Impressions:

  • The game overall looks pretty polished, which is good for first impressions, but I feel like the beginning tutorial and cutscene may scare players away because of it’s longevity. I think you should make it more clear that it’s optional. An idea would be to include it in the first level, but give the player a popup asking if they want to do the tutorial/cutscene. If this doesn’t improve your metrics, then maybe you should cut down the tutorial/cutscene.

Social Aspect:

  • I understand that the game is a single-player game, and that’s pretty cool! However, a cool idea that I thought of would be to be able to player against your friends! It could be simple 1v1s, or maybe 2v2s? I dunno, just thought it would encourage players to bring their friends

TD;LR: The game is fun and looks polished. Curb repetition, make things clearer, give the player more control, maybe add a social aspect and you’re good to go!

Best of luck! :+1:
