Hello, I just finished making this robot spider called the web crawler and wanted to know if the design and look of the model is good since I don’t have that much experience with building and don’t know how to use blender.
These lines on the back are going to be glowing when the model is colored
There’s these triangle symbols on the start of each leg and…
An arrow symbol specifically on both of the middle legs. I don’t have any special reasoning behind any of these design choices other than it looked cool and I don’t know if I should have, I don’t even know how I did this tbh since my last best model was this boat
and then my understanding of things got better overnight or something idk.
This is my first topic and I don’t have alot of experience as I already said before, so please be patient
First of all, I like the details on the legs specifically, I think they’re really well done. The arches of the legs are good too, and it is definitely recognisable as a robot.
However, a couple of important details to make it much more recognisable as a spider:
Spiders have 8 legs - yours has 6
The legs are all coming out on the same direction, most real spiders do not have this
Legs are coming from the abdomen (back segment) when on real spiders, they tend not to.
The head is quite separated from the body. This could be a decent design choice but it depends how it’s done - spiders in real life tend not to have a separate head.
Notice how on real spiders, the legs are all at different angles.
Of course, colouring it would also help! But I’m assuming you just haven’t gotten around to that yet.
I actually forgot to use any reference images, I should have done that since aside from actually having something as a reference, it would have also made the process faster than to have to completely rely on my memory. Thank you for the feedback :), I’ll make the changes after I’m done eating
Awesome. Post an update on here if you want any more feedback And reference images are always helpful! Even for the best modellers and builders, memory is never perfect so there’ll always be things you miss, or can’t tell why it looks a bit off until you check a reference.
I’ve made alot of experimental changes in a short amount of time, cuz I will be busy soon. I have a copy of the spider without these experimental changes, so if you don’t think they are good, I can just remove them.
First off, here’s some images for a genral look at the web crawler:
I added a claw to see what it would look like and would like to know your opinion about it:
Here’s the back, now with three of those cylinders and one additional detail:
I was not sure on how to make the legs directions all be different, so this is what I did:
There’s also this line that leads to the arrow symbols on the legs:
As I metioned at the start, I’ll be busy for some time, so I won’t be able to respond until I’m back
It’s difficult to judge it looks-wise when there’s no color or texturing, but the model looks good. I know that doesn’t say much, but I can’t find anything I take issue with.
Not using Blender will make texturing based on UVs difficult, if you want to have more detail and not just a color/simple texture. So, I recommend putting in time to learn Blender. Not only for that reason but also for performance and general knowledge. I assume that’s all made of Parts and unions and/or some MeshParts, as to why I mention performance.
Definitely better!
Consider how it would actually move, for the legs. I imagine there would be a sort of ball joint for the connection between the start of the leg and the main body of the spider, so that the legs would move more freely. You don’t necessarily have to add that visually, but consider the top-down view of the spider:
Yours currently is on the left, but the right would be more accurate to how a spider looks (you can see it feels more spidery).
The claws are okay, but would it still walk on them? Looks like it might make movement more difficult - if they’re meant to be more like arms, they should probably be angled differently.
Also I’ve noticed the antennae on the head. Spiders don’t (usually?) have any, so getting rid of them and maybe adding mandibles (the two ‘teeth’ that many insects have) could be a better addition.
I could try learning blender again, I already tried it once and failed, but it was a long time ago so it could work this time. Also, can you tell me what would be the best way to learn blender? It would help alot
What part of the face exactly shoud I add the mandibles? I’m asking because it could be the monitor the lower border of the monitor or add a little connected section to the mandibles.
Yes, the design of this robot spider looks great! Good job on it! How long did it take to make? What will it be used in? It looks awesome and unique for a Roblox game!
I think it took 9 to 10 hours in total since I wasn’t using any references at first and this was the most detailed build I’ve ever done. It will be used for a yume nikki inspired game I’m working on, I still don’t have pratically anything for the game yet tho, still thinking about the ideas of how the game will work. Originally it was a badge hunt game but I don’t even have enough robux for 5 badges, so that would not work at all (Also there is already alot of badge hunt games and I’m not sure if I would be able to come up with good ways to find the badges).
