Is the night lighting too dark?

I am hearing complaints about the lighting being too dark, so I updated the lighting:

Is it still too dark?

It depends on what type of game you’re making.

If its a vehicle simulator, go for Forza Horizon 3 night lighting.

If you’re making a horror game, do brighten it to the point where you can just barely make out objects.

If you’re not making either of those, brighten it a lot.

Editing on, on my monitor with standard settings, the image is almost completely pitch black. I cannot see anything.
After turning my monitors brightness up all the way it can, I could still only just resemble a truck and a road.

Most definitely raise the brightness a lot.

The only thing I can see are red dots and white lines. Everything else is black.
Whether or not something is too dark depends on your game. Horror games especially have really dark atmospheres so that the player isn’t as aware of their surroundings.

But if you’re suppose to be able to see in that screenshot, I can’t.

Are you going to provide players with a way to illuminate their surroundings?

I can see the sidewalks, the forest and the hill perfectly fine.

With their truck and cities have streetlights.

There is a boundary not to be crossed between gameplay and graphical, this steps heavily into the graphical perspective.

This is acceptable if you are developing a game where graphics are a heavy focus (showcases, genres), though not so much otherwise.

Keep in mind that compatibility also plays a role in this factor. (Different players use different screens, brightness, ratios etc)

As to answer your question, I would say brighter would be ideal.

There is a compatibility mode in the settings that makes it bright and disaables shadows.

The thing is, some people may not want to sacrifice shadows to see, or even go through a settings menu to see.

Most players would probably see just how dark the game is and leave because they just can’t see.

Brighten the games default settings.

Is this better?

Considering I can actually see the contents of the game now, yes. Much better.

And, as an additional fix to this I would probably add a brightness slider in settings so users can adjust how dark night actually is, if that’s possible with how you’ve scripted your game.
