I want to make this box a union, but I want to outer part and the inner part to retain their color and material. I couldn’t find anything in its properties that helped. Is this possible?

No sadly it is not possible, to have a union with 2 different materials.
You can do the same color, just not material.

I know the main problem has been solved, but I would not recommend turning that into a union. Unions aren’t very optimized for your game and it looks simple enough to build without unions.
The reason I wanted to make it a union is because I needed it to be one whole part for it to be attached to a rope. It’s for parkour. When I did it with two separate parts the inner part freaked out and threw itself out of the outer part. It also needs to be unanchored to get the affect I want.
You could also weld it or use a hinge
