Is there any limit on triangles for CHARACTER-RIG, which wears layered clothing?

Hello devs. I’m trying to make good layered clothing for my character, which have around 20k triangles (character, not clothing). After putting clothing on it, quality of character degrades a lot: some vertices go inside character, fingers became squished…
So I got quesion: what’s triangle limit for Character, which wear layered clothing (NOT CLOTHING ITSELF)?
