Im deciding whether or not to integrate visual studio code and github to my workflow. However right now I am a solo developer. Are these tools still useful in my case?
nope. anyone who says that vscode is good is just a larp and wants all these features you barely use. built-in roblox code editor is awesome and as having tried both vscode is pointless roblox is infe
vscode + rojo = failed obvious larp
the mistake is adding Rojo to the mix, vscode itself is extremely useful once you build your entire generic pipeline… which takes a few days-weeks.
TLDR: effort pays off, but requires putting effort to setup.
i assume rojo is implied here, else, how does vscode and roblox in relation here without rojo
Roblox Script Sync for just scripts, if you’re worried about the data model theres other ones.
Luau-LSP provides also a sync method directly via their plugin, which you SHOULD use since it provides modern Luau type corrections and allows for custom linting via .luaurc , which I pair with a stricter set of linting rules.
I have a full yap session somewhere talking to someone about that but too lazy to pull the devforum thread
C++ made the core Roblox engine, rendering, physics, networking, and much of the client/server infrastructure. Luau is the interpreted language that Studio uses.
C has been around forever and has tons of libraries. One of them links graphics rendering to Studio. Shockingly enough, you can say, “Make me a whatever,” and then import the mesh directly into Studio. That’s a whole new level. You looking for concepts, it’s never ending if you can read C.
C++ and more so C# are pretty easy also, you know more than you think about it now, just need to learn the syntax differences. Unreal Engine: C++, Unity: C#, Roblox: C++ engine + Luau
All three have tons of tools for creating and exporting assets. You can use Unity and Unreal as tools alongside Roblox Studio.. create things there, export them, and bring them into Roblox.
So yes, very much so.
Is it any more useful than Roblox Studio on its own? Not really. But I use it anyway!
It’s mostly preference at this point, and it’s a great skill to have. I like using Git over Studio’s version control, and VSCode as an IDE is miles better than Roblox’s script editor.
You don’t need to use Rojo either. Roblox has a script-sync feature now, which makes it easier than ever to use an external IDE. I highly recommend using that as a solo developer.
You’d also need some additional things, such as luau-lsp for type checking and instance sourcemapping.
So yeah, as a solo dev you don’t need it, but it makes your workflow much cleaner imo. And if you have a really large codebase, you’ll especially notice that it’s faster since Roblox’s script editor starts to lag behind.
no, the default roblox code editor works perfect, it’s not necessary to complicate the process with additional IDE’s and other stuff, roblox studio works perfectly fine for 99% of everything you’ll ever do in game development on roblox.
Lowk reading this whole thread it seems like everyone’s response is just “default Roblox IDE is decent enough” which doesn’t really answer whether VS Code and GitHub are useful , just whether they’re necessary.
like yeah, you can absolutely do everything in Studio and be fine. that doesn’t make proper version control, better static analysis/linting, extensions, automation, or just having your project exist as normal files any less useful.
especially now that Roblox has Script Sync and Luau-LSP has its own Studio plugin for instance/type information, I don’t really get why Rojo keeps being treated as synonymous with external editors either. you can use VS Code without restructuring your entire project around Rojo.
“I haven’t needed it” and “it isn’t useful” are two very different things.
All of these people saying VS code is bad and just larp, probably don’t know how to use it. And they aren’t really helping you choose correctly.
I’m not gonna sit here and tell you to use one over the other. It legit depends which is easier for you to use, if you want to learn VSC, and what you need VSC for.
Do you need to switch between different studios a lot and manage your code with Github? If so, use VSC. VSC can be very helpful and powerful. I personally use it, because I prefer using VSC, github, and all of the features it provides. ![]()
There are a lot of different reasons why you would need VSC or many reasons why you don’t need it. Depends if you want to learn it, set it up, and use it. Versus just using roblox’s built in studio editor which is also fine and will get the job done.
not necessarily rojo and GitHub, but both any sync tool and a version control system are good.
They can be useful but you don’t need them most of the time.
Roblox has version history and the default editor is already pretty good but you might prefer using a dedicated code editor like VS Code with like Roblox’s Script Sync or Rojo, but Rojo might be too overkill for a solo developer unless you prefer having your local files be the source of truth.
Github is completely unnecessary for a solo developer, Roblox’s version history does the job.
i personally use Script Sync + VS Code and a few extensions but the default editor is perfectly fine
I use Azul for backing up my scripts in case I need to revert back
So git + Azul is what I use.
Rojo is honestly a slop
Don’t use it
Worst experience ever
Azul is much better.
I also use Roblox’s script editor and use Azul purely for viewing/backing up stuff.
This can also be useful if you are somewhere away from home but still want to edit the codebase so you can pull the changes when you get back home using git.
azul is putting attributes all around your instances shitting in your experience.
sync script is just bad.
your only savior is scrip_io
A shameless plug eh
But staying on topic, Vscode + GitHub is ABSOLUTELY a most. Not only does it allow you to code offline, avoiding any connectivity, saving or any other roblox-related issues, but github gives you a 1000000x better version control system than roblox ever could
Rojo is also good for what it does, it’s not needed, but it definitely help syncing scripts from vscode to roblox better than roblox script sync
it would be greatly appreciated if you’d elaborated on this.
thank you!
its preference, try it, if you like it then keep it
WHAT!?
… since when?
