I am considering replacing my foil part water with terrain water, but I am afraid that it might cause a lot of lag. What is your experience with having large amounts of terrain water?
It depends what you want to achieve with the water. If you want it for decoration you should just stick with the foil. If you want players to swim around in it then use terrain water. Usually you want to avoid large amounts of terrain water since it is the laggiest terrain material. But terrain water does look the best so it is really what you are after.
It does not cause lag at all. It is perfectly fine from my experience.
I personally find that it doesn’t cause much lag in my creations, but mine are smaller scale. I’d suspect that at a larger scale, it could introduce some lag to the game, but I have no experience with that.
I disagree. I push the graphic abilities to it’s fullest to give my game the best possible look. From what I’m aware, there’s no lag. I think lag is mainly caused by the amount of parts or terrain that the game contains.
As long as you don’t go overboard with the terrain editor you should be fine. I usually don’t lag unless I have a lot of parts in the game that aren’t anchored and grouped.
100% is laggy - mainly because it affects load times. Especially super large parts. I’ve tested this with my game by joining the game before water terrain was added, and after water terrain was added.
Before water terrain was added, load times were less than a second. After terrain water was added (we’re talking super thin water terrain - where your character’s legs touch the bottom of the water) - load times were 15s-30s. Players told me load times were also extremely slow, with high crash rates on old devices (iPhone 6, iPad minis, iPods, etc.).
Don’t recommend water terrain if you plan to use it as a large ocean.
I have a large ocean around my island. I guess I’ll look into scripting the foil water.
