On one hand I’m all for this but on the other hand I know a lot of kids who get banned for putting viruses inside their game or through crosswoods
And they just can’t play roblox anymore
My best friend got permanently banned because he saw a “Ultimate trolling GUI” in one of flamingo’s videos, so he searched it on the toolbox and put it in his game
20 minutes later and account termination
Turns out that the person who made it had a special GUI inside of the GUI that had some not so family-friendly scripts inside it.
He couldn’t appeal it either.
A phone number is not even being used for security in this context, it’s being used for validation.
The article you link talks about obvious stuff like getting scam calls, or cross-linking your phone number with other data. Neither of these things are unique to phone numbers, email addresses receive the exact same kind of treatment.
If you are concerned, just use a Google voice number or something, it doesn’t cost money.

Yeah this is getting ridiculous.
You’re assuming every single device is a phone with a SIM card (meaning in most cases no phone number). Much of Roblox mobile users are young and typically don’t have one of those. Many younger people I know personally use a tablet and have no sort of phone number.
Roblox is pushing for using phone numbers in a way which they aren’t supposed to be used. They were never intended for validation or authentication. You also can’t use VOIP for phone numbers on Roblox as far as I’m aware.
Theres no way im giving 2 different companies my IRL phone number, one platform being infamous for their security breaches, ease of hacking for malicious users, and its generally ignorant support team. This validation method sucks, there has to be a different way of validation like being authenticator or email verified. Not to mention im in Turkey so i dont think roblox will accept my phone number.
Roblox has begun collecting our gameplay data and selling it to advertisers, right? Tons of companies do this and link it to their numbers too, so they can get robo/telemarketer. This seems a tad suspicious.
Actually, it does mention about account safety multiple times. I can tell that it was skimmed through.
Also, about Google Voice Number…
This is common to see when it comes to things like this. Me and my friends are Canadian and these are not easily accessible to us and let alone other countries that have further restrictions
This was done in response to the Hindenburg report and feels like an overcorrection, like several of the other changes they’ve done recently.
The main issue for me is SIM Swapping, this is still an issue on Roblox because they will not for the life of them remove SMS password reset, which is the attack vector SIM swapping manipulates.
Roblox, if you’re going to try and force me to have a phone number, get rid of this already.
Phone numbers were initially popularised sometime around 1920 (thats over a century ago), they are hilariously insecure and were never designed as a form of 2FA, they didnt even know what that was when coming up with it.
Wait, let me guess, you can only toggle that if you are in Europe?
There is a database floating around of the first few hundred accounts email addresses (lots of which are private/internal @roblox.com kind of addresses) and I do recall there was a large spambot wave once which used accounts that were claimed to be grabbed directly off Roblox (ie not phished, guessed, or credential stuffed) - This also isn’t factoring in that time that support person got bribed, which at least to my memory allowed for resetting passwords of any accounts.
still tho, it should be optional cuz some people like me dont have a phone number yet
i dont see an issue with it. it legally must be disabled for under 13 users and it can be toggled for everyone else
I see issues with it not legally, but from moral and financial perspectives. I personally believe that targeted advertising and surveillance must die out, for the health of both users and companies.
that won’t be happening any time soon, it’s literally how google stays in business and there’s really no major lobbying against it. this is not to say its a good thing either
oh my god they’re overreacting over that hindenburg report… phone number for JOINING GROUPS??? im sorry but i dont trust roblox with my phone number. they couldnt even keep the info of star creators safe, what should make me believe they can keep the phone numbers of regular players safe

While I agree that phone numbers are not great way to secure your account and that they shouldn’t be forced upon us (we can already use 2FA and security key for this), but this would be different if Roblox actually offer us options to ‘verify’ using one of those options like most websites does that (Github, Amazon, etc all provided multiple options to verify before accessing or doing something. For example, when you click “verify with another method”, it show you which to use like 2FA, Security Key, email, phone, etc).
Still, phone number shouldn’t be the primary method to verify ownership because it’s pretty stupid and phone numbers can be changed any time. 2FA and security keys should be strongly encouraged as they are completely unique to a device, can be used to prove that you own them.
It would be nice to verify once in a while, like once every week or more so it lessen headaches whenever we try to interact something on the website. Nobody want to verify every time they click a button…
