Large Landmass of Foliage

I am trying to achieve a method of creating large portions of trees with low amount of tris/verts.

This is for long distance sights (aircrafts) so up close details are not needed.

Some methods I have attempted are decimated mesh trees with a texture (However on large landmass quickly add up)

Some methods Im looking into possibly are either using a texture and creating a possible illusion?

Have you tried using decals? That would probably be the option for you

is it possible to find a suitable place in google maps, and then just screenshot it and crop it and make it a decal?
