Why?
If you don’t mind Ill start with a bit of a backstory. My name is Johnathan, I am in my early 20s, and I have been on Roblox since 2009. Back when I first started learning Studio there was hardly any documentation. YouTube had some tutorials, but the space was young. I learned 90% of what I know today by experimenting and doing lots and lots of reading. Now a days things have changed a bit. You have lots of YouTube videos, Roblox provides plug n play modules, there’s even games that teach you to program on Roblox. Even still with all of these resources the learning curve is steep.
My younger brother is following in my footsteps and is having trouble learning all the aspects of making games in Studio. A problem I often have with tutorials (this goes for every platform) is they tell you what to do but not why. “Use a module script here and put these values in it”, yes but why? Why do I need these values? What do they do? What does a module script do? Why do I need to require the module script? A tutorial that answers one question but opens doors to so many more, these are what I often find.
That’s my why. I want to solve that problem with Lets Learn Lua. I want Lets Learn Lua to be your go to place for anything Lua, not even just Roblox. Lua is a powerful language, its syntax is beautiful, its a personal favorite of mine, and it has huge potential. Not to mention it writes similar to Python and JavaScript. It can be your gateway language into the world of programming!
What?
What is Lets Learn Lua? Well, I want this to be so much more than just tutorials. My goal is to have a place where you can find Plug N Play modules to build games. Imagine Plug N Play tower defense, or tycoons, or simulators, etc. I want there to be class rooms where people can participate and ask questions. I want there to be forums where people can all collectively help one another. I want the ultimate hub for learning all things Lua. Not restricted to just Roblox; such as Love2D, Defold, Pico8, OpenResty, etc.
Who?
Lets Learn Lua is for everyone and anyone! If you consider yourself quite skilled then join and help out others! If you are a beginner than join and get helped by others! Our goal is to grow a community united over a common interest!
Where?
Join our Discord! This is where everything will be happening. It’s still very much a work in progress but it grows more and more each day! Lets Learn Lua is still in the early stages of figuring out where we fit and how this will all work. However, we are available for questions and we would love to answer as many as we can!
