Hey there, I am currently working on my game, which now includes loot boxes. I have gotten different information from different sources and I am unsure where to go with this. My game has two types of items, cosmetics and boots, power ups, etc, and I am planning on having the cosmetics be in the loot boxes. The loot box will be bought for a relatively low amount and will have a 50% or 80% refund on duplicates. Both the power ups and the cosmetics are in the normal shop at the moment. My dilemma: should I have the cosmetics be only in the loot boxes, or in the loot boxes as well as the shop? If I choose just the loot boxes, then it might be hard for someone to get a certain item, like a lot of loot boxes to get it, but maybe that is where the refund comes in. If I choose both the shop and the loot box, then there isn’t as much of a point in someone buying something from the loot box, when they could just buy it from the shop, though they would have the certainty of buying it, not the more randomness of the loot box.
So what are your thoughts on this, and which way should I go?
Just in loot, or both shop and loot
Just in loot boxes
Both in the shop and loot boxes

I would love to hear your opinions in the comments as well!
I think it would be better if you put them only in loot boxes because:
simplicity - you can get an item only from one source
rarity - if something is meant to be rare then I would go with loot boxes because if the item is in the shop, then it does not feel that rare and hard to get imo, once somebody gets enough money they can buy it without buying lootboxes
more people will buy lootboxes if these items are only available from them
I think lootboxes will make players spend more money.
Of course a lot of people will spend money on loot boxes, that’s the intended purpose of them
But still, Roblox is a game for kids - teens (atleast is marketed towards them), so personally, I’d go with loot boxes and shop.
To make an item more rare, you can just limit the chances of it appearing on the shop, and for how much the item costs. It’d still have the value, and you’re not promoting gambling!
Yeah that is what I was kinda thinking, but I just don’t know, maybe I can get some beta testers to try both ways…whistle* we are very divided here in the polls…
Yeah that is my one big reason for doing loot boxes, and if anyone thinks that would be greedy, I would say that hey it is their money, plus if their money doesn’t go to my loot boxes, it will probably go to some other roblox game…
You shouldn’t be ashamed to say that you’re making games to make money. That’s what a lot of people do and for some of them it’s their job. I’m also making a game for two reasons. One is that I love to create games and second is that I want to earn money from it. Simple as that.
I think it could depend on the item. For example, a Christmas outfit could be available only in the shop for a certain amount of time, and for like the anniversary of your game you could have a cosmetic that shows up in loot boxes for a limited amount of time.
In general, I’d recommend a shop that has a handful of items that rotates daily/weekly (all could rotate at the same time, or you could have items rotate in an out on different times based on rarity), as well as having loot boxes.
