Low Poly character design

I’ve been practicing making characters in a hand-painted, low poly style. Would you play a game with these kinds of character models? Any character suggestions/improvements? Would love to hear your thoughts.

I don’t see why I wouldn’t.

I feel like the textures would fit the model better if they were a lower resolution (as in to where you can actually see the individual pixels easily). Low-Poly and Low-Res go hand-in-hand with eachother.

I honestly think if you model low-poly, you either go for the super generic low-poly style (the kinda stuff you see when you google “low-poly character”), or you go a more PS2 and/or PS1 look.

I’m going for a PS1 type of look, thanks for noticing!

I wanted to have the textures more pixelated, but Roblox doesn’t have good support for low res textures, as they get automatically smoothed out. Sure, I could upscale them, but at that point I’d rather go for smoother colors

Looks fantastic, just pixelate the images and it’ll look great. Would say to not manually turn down the resolution, rather, keep the resolution high, just pixelate it using pixel shaders.

What are some pixel shaders? I’ve never heard of those for Roblox. Could you please share some? How performant are they?

I don’t mean inside of Roblox. I mean in the software you’re using. You can use shaders to pixelate the image and then bake it into an image texture.

Addon to what @jackmraow mentioned, if you’re using something like Substance Painter to make the materials, they often have filters, and one of the default filters is a pixelate filter. It’s something you can really easily apply to materials.

In that example I did just import the already exported material and apply the filter but you can apply it to each layer before export

Other software should also have this functionality, although it may be a little more complicated to achieve.

Ah, my bad. I heard “shader” and thought it was a lighting setting.

I’m using Blender for all my modelling/texturing, so I wouldn’t know how to apply that pixel effect. Thanks for the idea though!

This low-poly character design is good! Great job on it! How long did it take to make? I rate this 10/10!

As a 3d modeller myself, I have to say this ticks all my boxes. Great job - feels almost Manga style!
