Making Stripes in Blender for Animals

Alright, so the title is pretty self-explaining. Basically, I want to create markings for my animals that I make within Blender. An example of what I might want is this:

Stripes that align with it’s backside.

However, I’m not sure of how to make stripes that align with the body of my creature. If someone could give me a solution, that would be AMAZING! Thank you!

You could use the knife tool (by pressing k) and then either dragging the outline of the stripes or clicking where you want each point. Then you could select the faces inside of your cut and vertex paint them, texture them, or whatever you want to do with them.

How would I make it a symmetrical cut?

If your animal is symmetrical, cut it in half and apply the mirror modifier. Then do the cut. If your animal isn’t symmetrical then I’m not sure.

Seems pretty legit, I’ll have to try it out for myself. Thank you!!!

No problem. Just tested something and found out that if you hold control with the knife tool, the point snaps onto an edge. Maybe you could do that if your animal isn’t symmetrical. It seems a bit fidgety though.

Instead of adding in more faces, you could just UV unwrap it and paint on a texture.

This would require you to join the objects together, texture it (either by painting directly on it or by making one in another program), then split it into parts again. It’s what I did for the Niffler rig for Fantastic Beasts event, which turned out pretty good.
