Map suggestions for an Airport Tycoon game

Hello Community

i worked the previous couple months on my tycoon game and now is the time to create a map for it. As you can see on the picture below; it´s a plot based tycoon game where every player gets assigned one plot.

In the game you can build your own airport how you like and manage it accordingly to expand it.

So i already build some stuff like a highway (for players to move between plots) and the first side of a ‘border’ but I need more ideas/suggestions for improvements so i can fill the empty spaces and the front of the plots.

Unfortunately the map is very big (we talk here about 13,2 k studs in length and 3,6k studs in width for the plots itself and some spacing between them) which makes it difficult to decorate.

The Map so far (only one plot currently, 3 more get copy-pasted at the left side of the current plot later on):

Any help is appreciated.
Thank You

As a start, I think some trees over unclaimed land might be a good start. As players claim plots/land, the trees disappear, and when they leave the game/reset progress - the trees appear again. You can use the BrushTool plugin to quickly put trees.

Maybe some small rivers/lakes between plots? Nothing that will make the construction of an airport irl a problem, just small water bodies.

You´re right. Trees and rivers should appear in this kind of map of course. Thanks!

Trees as mentioned above will help with filling in the map.
I am not sure the direction the game is going in, however a good way to make a map look bigger than it really is, is by adding an ocean around it.
On top of this textures are a must have. Another thing that can add onto the map is elevation change. Currently it is flat but with a more unique landscape it will make your map look as if it is much higher quality.

As well, lighting makes a HUGE difference. Mess around with your bloom, and other lighting settings to make it appear more cartoon-ish or whatever you want.

Yeah, i already thought of a ocean with a beach at the side. Ima remember this :+1:

The same with textures. I added a floor texture currently but i still need to figure out the z-fighting for my roads.

I also thought of houses with small hills, roads and cars spaced around the map so that the map gets filled with live a bit.

For the lighting, you cant see it very good on the picture but i customized it quite a lot recently and in-game i am really satisfied with the result as it really matches the cartoony style.

What do you exactly mean by ‘direction of the game’ ?
It´s basically a tycoon where you control/manage your own airport. You can also Roleplay and stuff if you want. Or did I misunderstood?

Thanks for your response.

So i made some changes now:

I added some elevation (Hills, Houses, Ocean, Trees, even some crop fields).
I also added Roads for the map to feel a bit ‘lively’.

I know that the trees are not enough. I am gonna add more when all other stuff is placed.
I am also gonna add some rocks, flowers and bushes/hedges with the trees.

For decoration over unclaimed land, I am still working on it. I just ´don´t want that the post gets closed. That´s for the update.

Does someone have another idea what i could add?

Nearly a year later im still developing. As you can see i added many new things. We have villages, citys, beach areas, parks, playgrounds and crop fields. Any more suggestions?

Does someone has any more feedback on this?

The new pics are actually pretty neat and I think the map feels quite complete on the shoreline. What do you plan on adding behind the plots?

btw, can we get a closeup of the sand/water? I like the white effect you can see from the zoomed out pic

Nice to hear. Right now I doesnt have anything planned for the back of the plots but maybe in the future.

Here´s the pic of the water:

There is a good tutorial for this: Water Tutorial

i think it looks pretty good but i do have some things to add (if applicable ofc)

i like the scenery around, makes it seem a lot less dead. now, i’m not too sure what kind of “style” you want to achieve, but i think having some sorts of quasi-industrial-industrial areas around the map closer to the airports would make it more realistic?

these are more urban, but generally, most airports follow the same format because no one really wants to live near an airport.

if your game is in a more rural setting, maybe places like Spokane, Saskatoon, etc. (medium sized settlements)

just my opinion, do what you find suits best for your game
