Massive Terrain-Based Map?

I want to create a game that has a really big map to play on open world. Is this feasible using the in game terrain? Like players should only have nearby terrain loaded in so would having very large terrain be an issue? And if so are there work arounds that only make the player render what they need to? Thanks!
