Medieval RPG Faction/Reputation system

So i’m working on a medieval RPG game, similar to games like Vesteria or Legendary: The Forsaken Shore, however less grindy and more story/community based. I’m including a faction/reputation system, and I plan to have 4 main factions. My original idea was that you have individual reputation for each faction, and you can join a faction’s military if you have good reputation and a high enough skill for their type of combat ( ie. melee, ranged, magic, etc )

I’m unsure how I want this to work though, I don’t want to limit what type of combat a player can do when they join a faction ( Vesteria ), but I also don’t want to make all of the factions just reskins of each other.

So far the 4 factions are as follows:

  • A medieval fantasy faction full of knights and lords, probably located in either the snow or forests.
  • A coastal faction similar to the first faction but based around ranged and ship combat, they would be a collection of island cities that you need a boat to travel to, and players can defend the islands against other factions.
  • I’m unsure what the third faction should be, but it’s most likely going to be heavily magic based, and likely located in the desert or other desolate area.
  • The fourth faction is a collection of knights from a fallen order, really lore heavy and religious, basically just jack of all trades, good with melee, ranged, magic, and are feared warriors. You wouldn’t be able to join this faction easily like the others.

I feel like i’m ripping a bit off of Vesteria but I can’t think of a way to make them all unique without basically just being re-skins of each other. What are your ideas and opinions?

To not ripoff Vesteria, consider having more factions and radically changing the background context. For example, instead of a medieval game, you can make it antique, then the factions will be different nations (or at least their representative military), such as Rome, Greece, Carthage, Egypt, Babylonia, Persia and the Vikings. Or for example a Renaissance version with the Republic of Venice, Austria, France, Two Sicilies, Kingdom of Sardinia, Switzerland and the Ottoman Empire.

Yes, it would be good if the factions are unique, but never make it a purely “melee” or “magic” faction because no civilisation or community was ever so. Consider playing “Clash of Empires” where good RP and war mechanics are both present.
